1) Difference between Hydraulic coupling and torque converter.
2) Purpose of using an overdrive in a vehicle
An overdrive used to be a separate transmission mounted behind the main transmission, and provides an additional set of gears to reduce engine RPM at highway speeds. Most heavy trucks still use overdrives in this manner. In modern automobiles, the overdrive has been incorporated into the car's transmission and describes the top gear ratio. A vehicle transmission has several sets of gears, and these gears are selected, either manually or automatically, as the vehicle accelerates, to keep the engine RPMs within its most efficient range. In the old days, the top gear of the transmission was a direct drive, or a "1-to-1" gear ratio. In other words, without overdrive, the engine and drive shaft of the car are turning at the same speed in high gear. An overdrive gear ratio increases the driveshaft speed to turn faster than the engine's RPM, which allows the engine to run slower at highway speeds for better gas mileage. That's why most automobile transmissions now include an overdrive.
