Reading
You will be amazed by how much progress your child will make in
first grade!
Please make sure to read with your child 10-20 min. each night to
ensure his/her success.
Your childs reading level will be targeted in his/her guided reading
group. Books will be sent home that have been introduced in class
and are to be reread at night to build fluency, word recognition,
sequencing and comprehension. You will find these small books in
the homework folder of your childs S.T.A.R. Binder.
Your child will participate in The Daily 5 during our guided reading
block. The Daily 5 is used to reinforce skills taught in a fun way,
promotes cooperative learning, independence and responsibility.

Spelling
Spelling words will be given each week with the Journeys story. The
spelling words reinforce the weekly phonics focus. I will have the
spelling words listed on the class newsletter as well as in the
planner.
Please practice these words nightly. At the end of the week your
child will be assessed on the weekly word patterns taught.
Words Their Way is a spelling program used in my classroom.
What is Words Their Way?
Words Their Way is our word study program that we will be using this year. It will expose your
child to many new words that fit into different patterns based on prefixes, suffixes, root words,
patterns throughout words, etc. My goal is to expose your child to as many word patterns as
possible to help them decode words, understand the meanings of difficult words, and recognize
word patterns in his or her future! It is important that your child studies his or her word sort
every week to ensure that they have learned their new pattern!
