Incomplete Dominance:

 Neither form of the gene (allele) is completely

Incomplete Dominance DOMINANT or RECESSIVE.
 No LOWER-CASE letters are used.
 Heterozygous individuals show a BLEND of
the two traits.
 There are THREE possible phenotypes, not
just two.

Incomplete dominance Incomplete dominance

 The heterozygous condition will result in an offspring An alternate notation for incomplete
that is not exactly like either of the parents, but
rather, a mixture. dominance is by using symbols such as those
 For example, some plants are capable of having red, shown below.
white, or pink flowers.
 The red and white alleles mix to produce the pink
 Red = RR
flowers when one of each allele is present. White = R’R’
 Because there is not a recessive allele, both alleles Pink = RR’
are represented by capital letters.
 Example = Flower color  Red=CRCR
 Red = RR
 White=CWCW
 Pink = RW
 White = WW  Pink=CRCW

Use the genotypes above to perform the crosses
An incomplete dominance example: below.

 Assume that fur color in rabbits is controlled Cross two tan rabbits.
by a gene that shows incomplete dominance. Cross a brown and a white rabbit.
Rabbits can either be brown, tan, or white. Cross a white and a tan rabbit.
Write the genotypes for each color below.
 Cross a brown and a tan rabbit.
 Brown: __BB__
 Cross two brown rabbits.
 Tan: __BW___
 Cross two white rabbits.
 White: __WW_

Cross 2 tan rabbits:

 BW x BW

 Genotype Ratio:
 25%BB: 50% BW: 25% WW
 Phenotype Ratio:
 25% brown: 50% tan: 25% white
