Lesson 2, Term 2
Fitness Skills Testing

Learning Intentions

AusVels

Today we are learning.

Experience a range of physical activities in order
to find the students strengths and
weaknesses.
Display physical ability in relation to fitness
testing of cardio-respiratory, muscular
strength and muscular endurance fitness.

Whole class / Focus Group

This lesson will be conducted in the gym; this will

be divided into separate stations.
Due to the large group sizes, the groups will be split
amongst the stations with no more than 8 to a
station. The class consists of mixed females and
males.

Date: 01/05/2015

Due to a largely full curriculum

9B/9G/7B/7D will be participating
Each class consists of aprox 24 students
Mixed females/males

Health and Physical Education

1. Movement and physical activity

Level 8: Students learn skills such as monitoring

intensity during exercise, which help them maintain
health-enhancing levels of physical activity. They
participate regularly in moderate to vigorous physical
activity and explore factors that influence participation.
Level 9-10: Students regularly participate in moderate to
vigorous physical activity, set personal fitness goals,
develop a fitness program and evaluate its success.
Special Considerations

Due to the large group sizes, the groups will be split

amongst the stations with no more than 8 to a station.
The school also has a curriculum constraint which means
that more than one year level participates within a PE
session.

Focus Questions

Linked to Learning Intentions

-

Cardio benefits of regular exercise

Australias physical activity guidelines for young
people 13-17: should accumulate at least 60
minutes of moderate to vigorous physical
activity every day.
- Should include a variety of aerobic activities
including some vigorous intensity activity
- Instruct how to conduct each skills test
- Instruct relevance of each test
Alternate ball toss: Hand/eye (Cricket/tennis)
Shuttle run: Speed/agility/explosive power
(Athletics/netball/tennis)
Stork stand: Balance (All sports)
Push Ups: Upper body strength (Tennis/volleyball)
Basketball throw: Upper body power
(Basketball/netball)
Vertical jump: Lower body power (Basketball)
Sit and reach: Flexibility (Gymnastics/Dance/Karate)
-

From your result today have you identified any areas

where you may need to work on in your weekly
exercise plan?
What sports do you play and which skills do you think
are most relevant to you?
Did you discover a good technique to get better
result? If so, what was it?
What could you do to improve the skills you did not
do so well at?

Encourage best scores

MAIN BODY
Guiding Inquiry and Practise
Assessment Criteria: Assessment AS Learning

Assessment criteria: Assessment FOR learning

1.
Stretches and warm up sequences in pairs
(What muscles do you think you need to
stretch?)
(Will you passive or active stretching preexercise?)

During the briefing the students will be asked what

they believe they will understand from their results
from the circuit
(establish prior knowledge)
(Understanding assessing fitness levels)

The students will be asked for technique cues for

Lesson Structure:
each station and how they think they could achieve
the best results e.g. keep ball low in hand toss
15 min
(establish prior knowledge)
- Introduction, briefing, assessing prior

(Increase knowledge of skills to increase successful
Engaging students interest
participation in sports)
Finding out existing knowledge and skills
-

Making it relevant
Active stretching in pairs
45 Min
The students select their begging station,
having no more than 8 to a station.
The students have the freedom to move
about and complete their testing
They are given the opportunity to do the
best out of three tries
After all students have completed the test
the results will be recorded in their fitness
diaries for re-assessing at the completion

CONCLUSION
Sharing, Explaining and Reviewing Inquiry
Share time. Student reflection. What do they now know?
Assessment Criteria: Assessment OF Learning
The students were given time for self-evaluation in order
to assess the level of comprehension
The students were encouraged to keep a fitness diary in
order to assess their own weekly exercise routines and to
then compare this to the recommended amounts
This will give the students data to compare their fitness
achievements on completion of the curriculum.
The students should have an increased knowledge base
of skills for sports and life.

of the fitness unit and comparison

15min
- Students will take part in a fun game
which incorporates many of the skills
tested
- Students split in two
- They stand on the furthest lines of the
court
- They are given numbers
- Various balls are chosen, as a ball is
thrown in, the players must adhere to the
rules of that ball (e.g. Basketball)
- The players are selected by choosing
random numbers
- The students waiting become the goal
keepers (as in end zone)
5 min
- Students will do passive stretching and
discuss learning questions
2. Monitoring/Assessment
Teachers will actively encourage he
students
The teachers will assist the students on
their technique
Students will be assessed on their
participation in the activity and their
knowledge on completion
The students will record their results in
their fitness diaries and will have the
opportunity to re assess on the completion
of the fitness unit

Did students achieve the Learning Intentions?
Success Criteria
What were the successful strategies?
How did you the teacher get them to the end result?
Where to from here? Whats next?

Mentor Teacher Feedback

Strengths / Areas for Improvement

How will we work to improve them?

I feel that when I attempt this lesson plan again I will make it more exciting for the
students by encouraging personal bests.
I feel that this unit would be best completed prior to the multi sports unit, or at the
beginning of the year in order for the teachers to be able to assess skill level giving
the curriculum deeper purpose, which will potentially improve the outcome of skill
acquisition for the students.
More examples of active stretching were needed as many of the students seemed
unsure. Perhaps this needed to be more structured
The students will then continue on to complete an 8 week fitness curriculum to aid
understanding and increase fitness levels.
The circuit could be repeated after the multi sports unit in order to build the students
knowledge of skill acquisition.
