Course Outline
Welcome to Speaking and Listening for ELL level 2/3! This course is designed to enable you to
develop the skills to comfortably communicate through oral language and learn more about
Canadian culture as well as English literature. This course will assist you in becoming more
fluent and confident English speakers and communicators.
In ELL Speaking and Listening, you will:
Learn more about life in Canada in connection to culture, language, and customs
Develop your listening and speaking skills in English, which will assist you in your writing
and grammar skills
Interact with literature and learn to analyze, critique and critically discuss many forms of
language
Course Content:
As this is a level 2/3 split class, the topics will be the same each week, but activities may vary.
Students may work from different workbooks but will still be able to engage in full class
discussions. Each student will be assigned work based on their necessary level of difficulty.
These are the intended topics for each unit, but may be adjusted based on students levels.
Unit 1 (Week 1) School Culture
Reviewing initial conversational techniques
Introduction to school staff, classmates and learning more about the school
Interviewing a classmate and introducing them to the class
Going through Students Handbook and Emergency procedures to better understand
expectations in the classroom and school communities role playing scenarios
Unit 2 (Week 2) Communicating in Canada- the social and cultural issues
What are the requirements and expectations in a Canadian school?
Learning effective study, note-taking and time management skills
Introduction to Canadian culture and major cultural groups
History of Canadian society
Understanding differences in communication between Canadians and international
students how to have a conversation with a Canadian role play
Stereotypes of various cultures and how to be a mindful citizen
Unit 3 (Week 3) Language at play: Similes, Metaphors and other figures of speech
Learn how to recognize and analyze the use of metaphors and similes
Interesting, useful and thoughtful idioms
How to choose effective and appropriate figures of speech in writing
You will write your own figures of speech similar to those studied in class and share with
the class
Unit 4 (Week 4) History of the English Language & Building words from their roots
Learn the origin of the English language and all the historical events that shaped its
evolution
Create a timeline of events to better understand the changes in the language

Throughout the term, I will provide feedback to each student to let you know where you stand in
the class. If you have any questions or concerns, or need to speak to me privately, please do
