1. Whatareatleasttwostrengthsandtwoweaknessesofyourschool?
Two strengths my school has regarding providing an active and healthy school
environment is recess/ lunch and duringschool activities. However, the school lacks
strengthinareassuchasafterschoolactivitiesandschoolcurriculum.
2. Describeeachstrengthandweaknessbasedonyourobservation/experienceaswell
asyourresultsfromtheSchoolAssessmentTool.
AstrengththatBroadmorElementaryholdsisprovidingavarietyofhealthyfoodchoices
forbreakfastandlunch.Someoftheoptionsstudentscanchoosefromarefreshfruits,
suchasmelon,pineapples,andapples,freshvegetables,suchasbeans,corn,andpeas,
hummus,bakedchicken,salads,andmilk.Inaddition,inthemorningallstudentshave
accesstofreebreakfast.

Anotherstrengththeschoolhasisprovidinganactiveandhealthschoolenvironment.
Eachdaymyclassbeginswithdailyexercisessuchasyogatohelpthestudentsprepare
mentallyandphysicallyfortheday.Throughouttheday,wevisittheseexerciseswhen
studentsstarttofeeltiredandaftertheyrotateforclasses.Studentsarealsoabletotakea
brainbreakduringclasstojumprope,walkorrunalaparoundtheplayground,ordo
yoga.Lastly,physicalmovementisintegratedinavarietyofsubjectsthroughouttheday.
Insocialstudies,studentsdancetosongstohelpthemrememberhistoricalevents,and
aregivenanexerciseroutinetocompleteaftertheyfinishtheirdailymathreview.
Nonetheless,Broadmorholdsmanyweaknesseswhenitcomestomakingtheschoolan
active and healthy environment. One weakness is the lack of physical afterschool
activities.Manystudents areinvolved insports suchafootball,track,cross country,
dance,andcheerleading,however,thestudentsinformedmethatnoneoftheseactivities
areprovidedbyBroadmor.Althoughtheschoolsendsoutamonthlynewsletter,itdoes
notprovideinformationonhowtobuildandmaintainahealthylifestyleathome.
BroadmoralsolackshavingastrongcurriculumbynotputtingastrongemphasisonPE.
EachgradelevelgoestoPEtwiceaweekforonly30minutes.AfterobservingaPEclass
period,Inoticedthatthestudentsaremostlyrunninglapsorcompletingobstaclecourses
ratherthanlearningaboutandplayingsportsordifferentexercises.
3. Whatareatleasttwowaystoimprovethepoliciesinplaceatyourschool?Explain
detailedinformationforeachwayandwhatyouexpectfromeachway.
Onewaytoimprovethepoliciesinplaceatmyschoolistoeducateparentsonhowto
provideanactiveandhealthylifestyleathome.Sinceteachersareunabletocontrolwhat
happensathomewhenitcomestohealthyeatingandexercising,theschoolcanholda
monthlyHealthNightmeetingwithstudentsandparentstoinformthemabouthealthy
eating,easyathomedinnerrecipes,ordailyexerciseideas.Onceamonth,theschoolcan
invitetheparentstoaschoolwidemeetingthatcoversdifferenttopicsofhealth.During
eachmeeting,theschoolcancoveraspecifictopic,suchasHealthyEatingAtHome,
and allow students and parents create delicious, easy, and healthy recipes! Another
monthlytopiccanbeExercisingasaFamilywherestudentsandparentscanlearn
aboutthebenefitsofexerciseandwaystheycanexercisetogether,suchaseveningwalks
orafamilyworkoutcompetition. Thepointofthisactivityiscreatinganactiveand
healthyfamilyandhomelife!
Anotherwaypolicymyschoolcanaddisafterschoolsportssuchastrack,flagfootball,
soccer, cheerleading, or dance. Currently, the school has an afterschool club where
studentscangotocompletehomeworkandsocializeuntiltheirparentspickthemup.
However,Ihavenoticedveryfewphysicalactivitiesareavailableatthistimeforthe
students.Inordertosuccessfullyincorporateafterschoolsportsintothecurrentpolicies
theschoolneedsteachersandvolunteerswhoarewillingtocoachandmonitorthese
activities.Thisideaalsobenefitsparentsbecauseiteliminatesthestressoftransporting

theirchildtopracticeontime.Inaddition,beingonateamdoesnotonlyallowthechild
to participate in physical activity, but it builds childrens selfesteem, respect, and
responsibility. ThesesportswillbeopentoallstudentsandBroadmorcanworkwith
surroundingleaguestosetuppractices,games,andsportgatherings.
4. Whatareatleasttwowaysthatyoucanyouusethisinformationtoengage
administration,teachers,parents,studentsandthecommunityinpromotingmore
healthfulbehaviors?Includeaspecificdescriptionforhowtousetheresultsfrom
theSchoolAssessmentToolaswellasyourideasforimprovement.
Inorderfortheschooltohaveafterschoolsportsteamsfortheirstudents,theymusthave
teachers,parents,oradministrationthatarewillingtovolunteertheirtime.Sincemany
schoolsstrugglewithfundingtheseactivities,itisimportanttohavestaffthatarewilling
togoaboveandbeyondtosupportthesuccessoftheirschool.TheSchoolAssessment
Tool promoted adding afterschool activities to improve the success of an active and
healthyschool.Icanusetheinformationtoshowtheschool,community,andstaffthat
thereisneedforimprovement,andweneedtothinkofnewwaystokeepourchildren
activeandhealthy.Sincemanystudentsarealreadyinvolvedinsportsandmanyparents
strugglewithtransportingtheirchildtothesesports,Icanaskthecommunity,teachers,
parents, and administration for help. Making these small changes and incorporating
sportsasanafterschoolactivityisonesmallchangewecanmakeasacommunitythat
canchangeastudentshealthforalifetime.
AlthoughlunchandrecessareoneofBroadmorsstrengthens,Ibelievetherearestill
waystoimproveandcreateahealthierenvironment.Duringthetimespentintheschool,
I have seen delicious and healthy meals served to the students, however, I feel the
studentsshouldbetaughtwhichtypesoffoodarehealthyandwhytheyarenutritious.
Goinghandinhandwithaddingadditionalafterschoolactivities,Broadmorcanstarta
CookingClubwherestudentslearnthebenefitsofhealthyeatingandsimplerecipesthey
canmakethemselves!Inelementaryschool,Iparticipatedinasimilarafterschoolactivity
whereIlearnedtomakesnacks,suchasfruitkabobs,peanutbuttercelerysticks,and
yogurtparfaits.Afterschoolseveralteachers,parents,andadministerscancometogether
torunthisafterschoolactivity,andinvitevariousschoolsinthecommunity!
5. Howcantheinformationobtainedbeusedtosupportyourpotentialtopicforthe
SignatureAssignment?
FormySignatureAssignment,Iselectedphysicalfitnessandacademicperformancesas
mytopic.Beforecompletingthisassignment,Ibelievedthatmyschoolwasveryactive
duringschool;however,Ihavefoundthatthereisstillroomformorepotential.The
SchoolAssessmentToolhastaughtmeIneedtogettheteachersandstaffinvolvedin
thesephysicalactivities,alongwithaddingmoreactivitiesforthestudentsthroughoutthe
day.Also,ithelpedmerealizethatstudentsaremorewillingtolearnwhentheyareup

andmoving!IcanusetheinformationIfoundandwatchvideos,interviewteachers,and
researchdifferentphysicaltechniquesteachersusetobooststudentslearning.

Builtin1955,BroadmorElementaryapublicelementaryschoollocatedintheTempeSchool
District.Theschoolcarterstoapproximately670studentsgradesK5,andholdanaverageof33
studentsperclass.Theethnicityofstudentsthatmakeupthediverseculturalenvironmentis
approximately50%Caucasian,29%Hispanic,8%AfricanAmerican,4%Asian,2%American
Indian,1%PacificIslander,and6%other.Althoughtheschoolprovidesmanyservicestotheir
ELLstudents,Iamunawareoftheproportionenrolledattheschool;however,thereisanELL
classroomforeachgradelevel.Overall,36%ofthesestudentsareeligibleforfreeorreduce
lunch.
BroadmorElementaryisnotconsideredaTitle1school,andreceivedaBastheschoolletter
gradein20132014.Theneighborthatsurroundstheschoolissuburban,andismadeupmostly
Caucasian(60%)andHispanic(20%)families.Theneighborhoodconsistsof70%ofsingle
familyhomes,and50%ofthehomeownersowntheirproperty.Theschoolislocatedinasafe
neighborhoodwithlowtominimalcrimerates.
