A Special Thing
An artifact is much more than a famous piece from a long time ago; it can just simply be
two generations. One thing for certain whetherit is a vase or a (creepy) doll, they all have a
special meaning for the owner. . An objet d'art is usually passed down from different people as a
gift, or bequeathed when someone dies. Hailee Scott`s special artifact is a baptismal gown,
which has been passed down through multiple people in her family. Her family has had someone
that has been baptized for numerous generations. When she asked her mom about the dress,
Alicia said It is very important to our family, and I hope all of you girls will use the gown.
The Baptism ritual is practiced in many different branches of the Christianity, but her
family was baptized in the Catholic faith. Infants get baptized to remove original sin, defined by
Christians as the event in which Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree after God told them
not to. All infants are born with the sin, along with mortal sins and venial sins. Mainly infants
who are anywhere from two to three months old get baptized. Although it is not common you can
get baptized when you are older, or younger than that. When you get baptized they use Holy
water to remove the sin. A priest dunks you in a bath of the Holy water and says I baptize you in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirt. If they do not recite that expression,
the baptism is not valid. A baptism accomplishes five different things. The first thing it
accomplishes is that it forgives all sins, the next is it makes the newly baptized person a new

creature, then it turns the person into a newly adopted son of God and a member of Christ. Next
it brings someone into the flock of the faithful and brings them to share in the royal priesthood of
Christ. Lastly it leaves a spiritual mark of belonging to Christ on the soul. No matter what you do
after this happens you can never take away the mark. The Catholic faith also has Godparents.
These are people who your parents choose if they cannot take care of you or neglect you, to
continue raising you in the Catholic faith. Paige, Hailees one sister and her share the same Godparents, (her aunt and uncle) but her other little sister, Isabel, has different ones. As for getting
baptized twice, is not negligible if they got baptized using the Trinitarian formula, which is the
words they have to say as stated above. The only reason to get re-baptized would be for not using
the Trinitarian formula. Baptism is one of the seven sacraments and is the first step to leading a
life with God.
Christening gowns, also known as baptismal gowns, are what both male and female
nurslings wear. As stated in the last paragraph, they are usually a tradition to keep. They are
purely white to represent purity. The dress they have is white and very elegant. It has ruffle like
lines at the top and lace on the sleeves of it, besides the lace and ruffles there are also small
delicate flowers on the bottom of the dress. It is also one hundred percent cotton, so it doesnt
itch! It also came with a small bonnet that could only fit an infants small head. The bonnet has
lace and small open circles going around the edges of it. It was first used in 1966 by Jim
Robinson, then followed by Alicia. They bought the dress in Cincinnati, Ohio and it was made by
a company called Philippians, although no information was found on it. The next person to wear
it was Hailee Scott, then Paige. Next the order goes: Ryan, Isabel, Alex, and Shea. The price
range for a simple dress like this could be anywhere from thirty dollars to forty dollars. To buy a
gown, if the family one is not in good condition, you can go to a Christian store or online store

such as Amazon or eBay. The gown is one of the most important features of a baptism, although
there are other equally important things.
The tradition that they have carried on will definitely carry out through the Scott family,
but as for the Robinson family we are not sure yet. All three Scott girls will decide to raise their
children in the Catholic faith. They have each decided to have our later in life children to wear
the dress and bonnet. It is very important to our family, and I hope all of you girls will use the
gown,-Alicia Scott. Hailee`s parents want us to use the gown because they think it will be a nice
tradition to carry on. If you want to get your child baptized, my parents first joined a church, and
then talked to the priest by calling his office. By keeping the same christening gown as the rest of
the family they would be staying with the Catholic tradition, and what her parents would like.

Following Catholic traditions is very important to her family. Baptism was the first step
that each of Alicia and Greg`s children have taken in the catholic faith. The christening gown
itself has been worn more than seven times, at eight different baptisms. Linda Robinson got this
gown not knowing the significance it would later make. Her purchase has made a tradition
throughout the loving family. This proves how one little object can make a long standing impact
and bring a family closer to each other.
