Question 1: A vapour compression refrigeration system uses R12 and operates between pressure limits of 0.745 and 0.15 MPa.
The vapour entering the compressor has a temperature of 10C
and the liquid leaving the condenser is at 28C. A refrigerating
load of 2 kW is required. Determine the COP and the swept
volume of the compressor if it has a volumetric efficiency of 76%
and runs at 600 rpm.

Solution:

p1 = 150 kPa: Constant saturated temperature ( 20C)

p2 = 745 kPa: Constant saturated temperature (30C)

Question 2: A Carnot refrigeration requires 1.3 kW per tonne of

refrigeration to maintain a region at low temperature of -38c
determine:
C.O.P of Carnot refrigerator
Higher temperature of the cycle
The heat delivered and C.O.P when this device is used as
heat pump.

Solution:
1 C.O.P of Carnot refrigerator :
14000 KJ /hr
1.3 60 60 KJ / hr

heat absorbed
work done

= 2.99

2 Higher temperature of the cycle : T1

Question 3: A Freon 12 vapour compression system operating

at a condenser temperature of 40C and an evaporator
temperature of -5C develops 15 tons of refrigeration. Determine:
a) Mass flow rate of the refrigerant
b) Theoretical piston displacement of the compressor and piston
displacement per ton of refrigeration
c) Theoretical horsepower of the compressor and horsepower per
ton of refrigeration
d) Heat rejected in the condenser
e) The Carnot COP and actual COP of the cycle.

Solution:
.

From the p-h diagram of Freon 12,

h1= 185.4 kJ/kg

v1 = 0.065 m3/kg

h2 = 208.0 kJ/kg

h3=h4=74.6 kJ/kg

a) Refrigerating effect is given by qo= h1-h4 = 185.474.6=110.8 kJ/kg

Mass flow rate is given by m= (15211)/ 110.8= 28.6
kg/min
b) Theoretical piston displacement of the compressor is given
by V=mv =
28.60.065= 1.855m3/min
Piston displacement per ton V* = 1.855/15= 0.124 m3/min
