Tutorial 1 Laplace Transform and Complex Numbers
1. By applying the final-value theorem, find the value of f(t) whose Laplace
Transform is given by
F(s) = __10__
s(s+1)
Verify the result by taking the inverse Laplace Transform of F(s) and letting t.
(Problem B-2-8 of text)
Hints:
Apply Final-Value Theorem lim f(t) = lim sF(s)
t
s0
Solution:
F(s) = __10__
s(s+1)
lim sF(s) = 10
s0
OR
10__ = A + _B_ (Partial Fraction)
s(s+1) s
s+1
= 10 - 10_
s
s+1
f(t) = 10 - 10e-t
At t,
lim f(t) = 10
t

2. Given
F(s) = __1__
(s+2)2
determine the values of f(0+) and f(0+). (Use the initial-value theorem.)
(Problem B-2-9 of text)
Hints:
Apply Initial-Value Theorem lim f(t) = lim sF(s)
t0+
s
Solution:
f(0+) = lim __s__
s (s+2)2
=0
L[f(t)] = sF(s) f(0)
L[f(0+)] = sF(s) f(0+)
= __s__
(s+2)2
f(0+) = lim __s2_
s (s+2)2
= lim __s2__
s (s2+4s+4)
=1

3. Using partial-fraction expansions, find the function f(t) of the following

a) F(s) = _____10_____
s(s+1)(s+10)
b) F(s) = __1___
s(s+2)2
Solution:
a) F(s) = ____10_____ = A + _B_ + _C_
s(s+1)(s+10) s
s+1 s+10
= A(s+1)(s+10) + B(s)(s+10) + C(s)(s+1)
s(s+1)(s+10)
Expand the numerator and compare both sides:A=1
B = -10/9
C = 1/9
F(s) = 1 - _10_ +__1__
s 9(s+1) 9(s+10)
f(t) = 1 - 10e-t + 1 e-10t

b) F(s) = __1__ = A + _B_ + _C_

s(s+2)2 s
s+2 (s+2)2
= A(s+2)2 + B(s)(s+2) + C(s)
s(s+2)2
Again, expand the numerator and compare both sides:A= 1/4
B = -1/4
C = -1/2
F(s) = _1_ - __1__ - __1__
4s 4(s+2) 2(s+2)2
f(t) = 1 (1 - e-2t - 2te-2t)

4. For the following complex function

G(s) = __s+2__
s2(s+10)
obtain the expression of the functions in terms of
a) real Re[G(j)] and imaginary Im [G(j)] parts;
b) magnitude |G(j)| and angle < G(j)
Solution:
a) G(j) = ___j+2___
(j)2(j+10)
= ___j+2___
-2(j+10)
=___j+2___ * 10-j
-2(j+10) 10-j
=__2+20+8 j _
-2(2+100)
Re[G(j)] = _-(20+2)_
2(2+100)
Im [G(j)] = __-8 __
2(2+100)
b) |G(j)| = __|j+2|__
|-2||10+j|
= __ 2+4__
2( 2+100)
Angles can be determined from poles of G(j) (will be covered in later chapter)
2 + j tan-1 (/2)

10 + j tan-1 (/10)
< G(j) = tan-1 (/2) - 90 - 90 - tan-1 (/10)
= tan-1 (/2) - 180- tan-1 (/10)
