A common thought is that the wife is to stay at home and do "wifely" duties. I think Judy Parker was analyzing the role of women in our society. The wife has infinite roles, responsibilities, and her sole purpose is to please the man.

The common thought over probably the past 150 years is that the wife is to stay at home and do wifely duties. Especially in the 1920s and on it was commonly excepted that the wife was the cook, maid, house keeper, nanny, sexual toy, and so on. But is that all that a wife is? Is that her sole purpose? I think Judy Parker was analyzing the role of women in our society and how the man puts many of these limitations on her. The wife has infinite roles, responsibilities, and her sole purpose is to please the man physically and mentally, take care of the children, and take of everything socially as well as cooking. The idea of a wife is explored and I Parker challenges the idea of the wife when she ends with, My God, who wouldnt want a wife. Throughout, Parker talks about the role of women and basically shows how women are seen as the doer of all things other than keeping the family financially stable. That is the mans job. I connected with this piece because I have internally struggled with the idea of what a wife is expected to be and what a wife should be. Also when it is said that my wife will take the children and be solely responsible for them so that I am free, shows the backwards thinking and selfishness that this family system encourages. Its interesting that in the fifth paragraph, the wife is suppose to listen to me when I feel the need to explain a rather difficult point and so on. Its says that the wife should be obedient and docile; having no thoughts or feelings except positive ones towards her duties and her husband.
