AWQ3M Photography

Unit 1- Photography Basics


In this unit you will explore the elements and principles of design, the critical
analysis process and basic camera functions including aperture, shutter
speed, framing, depth of field, lighting and the rule of third. You will also
study the evolution of the camera and key figures in photography.
For this project, you will choose nine of the following photographs to shoot.
You will complete a series of nine carefully constructed 4x6
photographs illustrating the following:
o Capturing a clear moving object and clear background: stop action
o A blurred moving object with a clear background: shot parallel to the
camera
o A clear moving object with a blurred background: shot parallel to the
camera
o A short depth of field
o A long depth of field
o Asymmetrical balance
o Symmetrical balance
o A close up shot
o An unusual camera angle
o The rule of thirds
o Illustrating the element: of design: line
o Illustrating the element of design: value
A few important notes:
o Make sure your camera is set to the manual function, prior to
beginning to shoot (not automatic!)
o Think carefully about your composition
o You will have complete freedom to shoot the subject matter of your
choice, so be creative and think outside the box
o Each photograph will be shot in black and white
o I will be checking up on the progress of your photographs regularly
In addition to your photographs, you will write a two page double-spaced
paper discussing darkroom/35mm film photography. You will use the
information from this unit as well as three additional sources to discuss film
vs. digital photography. You will also include which you prefer and why.

Your Unit 1 Test will take place on Monday September 28 th!

You will submit all work and participate in a class critique on Friday
September 25th!
