Early Days in A Country School -Joyce Anaka Black Poplar School, located a mile south of Good Spirit Lake, opened — in 1923. In those days education was not a top Priority for some families. Teachers heard many excuses as to why a student was absent from classes. Times were hard and some parents needed their older, and sometimes younger, children at home to assist on the farm. My father, John Gunn, was on the school board and as secretary and also Attendance Officer received the monthly report. Reasons given for being absent varied from work, sick, too cold, bad roads, digging potatoes and a couple of more interesting ones such as the girl who was absent because she was “Iullabying the baby” and the note from the teacher, Miss Tymchuk, in 1925 that talked about sending a family home that day and went on to say: "I have my suspicions about this case of measles as | sent them home once before and they did not have them. This time she had it quite bad on her face and hands but | have heard they rub nettles on themselves and then come to school, and as it looks exactly like measles, Ihave to send them home. So if you will be going to Springside this week | would like you to drop in and see them.” ‘And the one my Dad chuckled over was the time he met the neighbours boy on the road and asked him why he wasn’t in school. His answer was that he had a ‘licence’. On checking with the teacher as to what kind of a so-called licence he had issued both he and Dad laughed when he explained: “Not a licence Mr. Gunn, he had lice!" { Teachers in the Black poplar School District 1923 - 1966 Source; Springside and District Memoirs 1923-1924 - William Gray 1925 - Alfred J. At the time of writing this, we have had several warm and sunny fall days and the farmers are hard at it in the fields. Summer is almost over and we hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and nice weather. Just a reminder that our children are back in school, so please remember school zones...slow down and keep our children safe. On that topic..the speed limit in town is 40 km in town. While we have received several complaints of people speeding in town, residents are encouraged to contact the RCMP in this regard if you see an offender. The more information you can provide to the RCMP, the better they are able to follow up: ie.: license number, vehicle description, driver description, etc. The hours of operation at the Postal Outlet and Town Office are Monday through Friday, 8:30 — 12:00 and 1:00 - 4:30. In November 2010, when it was agreed upon for the Town to take over the retail postal outlet as opposed to losing this service in our community, the hours were to be in conjunction with the already established Town Office hours. While itis realized that not always are these hours convenient for everyone, please contact the office 306-792-2022 if you have concerns regarding parcel delivery or any other concern. Our staff takes pride in their work and works hard to not only satisfy the retail postal demands placed upon them, but also to protect the privacy of its customers. If you operate a home based, store front or contracting business in our community or solicit business in our community, please make sure you obtain a business license. Please feel free to contact the Town Office if you have any questions at 792- 2022. The 2016 Recycling Calendars are now available at the Town Office. Stop in for yours today. They're a great reminder as to when to put your carts out for collection day. Also, please do not put your recycling carts right beside your garbage. With the automated cart emptying system, the truck needs room for the hydraulic arms. Please ensure the recycling carts are at least 4’ distance from any item In 2017, Canada will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Council is interested in creating a committee to plan for celebrating the occasion in 2017. Interested in helping out? We'd love to hear from you! The committee will meet in the fall to start planning! Please leave your name and number at the Town Office. You'll be contacted with the first meeting date, Did you know...the street lights are not owned by the Town of Springside? They are owned by SaskPower. If you see a burnt out or flickering street light, please report it by calling SaskPower at 1-881 757-6937, of online at www.saskpower.com (then select street light troubles). Due to concerns over health and safety, Council requests that residents remove any unlicensed or abandoned vehicles or appliances. ‘After September 1, the landfill will no longer accept shingles. The 2014 Drinking Water Quality and Compliance Annual Notice to Consumers is available at the Town office for viewing. First responders are responsible for responding to calls for help within their area and to provide patient care until an ambulance can arrive. If you are interested in volunteering with this rewarding organization, please contact the Town Office 792- 2022. Training and equipment provided. Anyone interested in joining our municipal fire department is also encouraged to contact the Town Office or Fire Chief Alvin Breitkreuz. A Summer of Fun at the Springside Library -Marion Ockochinski ‘Wow! What a great summer reading program at the Library! 29 children signed up for our team reading challenge and joined forces to take “Matey Mike” and “Pirate Pete” around the reading challenge game board. For every book read the reader could roll the dice and move their team’s mascot on the one hundred arrows to Treasure Island. Pirate Pete’s team won the race by completing the course 5 full times and ending on space number 66. Matey Mike's team took him around the board 4 times and left him on arrow number 6. In total 279 books were entered into the log books. Reading was just part of the summer at the Springside Library. Craft sessions included painting treasure boxes, creating pirate bandanas, designing pirate symbols and other artistic items out of melt beads, creating our own treasure maps and spending time building at the Lego table. The entire town was covered by our treasure seeking readers while they searched for puzzle pieces in the various Communities in Bloom planters and at some of the businesses in Springside. The first team to return to the Library and assemble their puzzles got to make the other team walk the plank! The plank made another appearance at our fancy dress pirate party and some of our dashing pirates even braved the plank to do a sword fight on it! Thanks to Regina Melnyk for purchasing pizza’s from Hotel California for our pirate party. Thanks to Trevor Shindle for help with constructing our “walk the plank”, And thanks to the Cornerstone Credit Union, Springside Town Office/Post Office and to Shauna Stanley Seymore for participating in our Puzzle Search Event. Thanks to Lori Jasper and the Co-operators for Summer Reading prizes. A Girl's Night was held on August 18 by Shelwin House rep Nicole. A movie to raise awareness of bullying was shown, popcorn and treats were part of the fun and Breanna Janzen was the lucky winner of the special door prize. Summer Reading prize winners were: Coloring contest winners: Connor Breitkreuz, Trayton Werner, Josie Hovdestad, Taylor Werner, Leland Ockochinski and Breanna Janzen. Pirate piggy bank draw was won by Tayler Shindle. Top reading prizes go to Anika Breitkreuz, Carys Anderson, Emma Ockochinski, Taylor Werner, and Winnie Wiome. Congratulations to every child who read even one book this summer and thanks to everyone who spent time at the library. “Libraries are reservoirs of strength, grace and wit, reminders of order, calm and continuity, lakes of mental energy, neither warm nor cold, light nor dark. unselfconscious, still and absorbed.” in any library in the world, | am at home, ~Germaine Greer Springside and District Recreation Board -Shauna Seymour The Springside and District Recreation Board is about 2 lot more than the rink. CMHC to Allow 100% of Suite Income Great news for home buyers! — CMHC has announced that, effective September 28, 2015 they will allow 100% of the rental income from legal secondary suites to be used when qualifying for a mortgage. CMHC says this decision was made in an effort to “facilitate affordable housing choices for Canadians”, It adds that “secondary rental suites are recognized as a source of affordable housing offered at a cost that is often lower than those for apartments in purpose built rental buildings.” This is a win-win as the home buyer will be in a better position to afford the property while offering a great opportunity for a tenant to live in a rental suite in a residential neighborhood that may not have been otherwise an option. Weber’s Old Time Threshing Day --Marion Ockochinski August 29, 2015 dawned with a hazy, smoke filled sky. At the Neber farm north of Springside ‘ound 10 a.m. pick-up trucks, cars ond ATV's started arriving for a special treat. The Weber's have been harvesting 2 field using by-gone methods for a few years for their own entertainment and have decided to invite some friends and neighbors to join them. As Matthew tells it, “It takes the same amount of work to do this for our own fun ast does to show it to others, so we decided to make an event of it.” The field was sown to oats earlier this year using machines true to the 1930's. The crop was quite short due to the dry spring and the conditions all farmers lived through in spring and early summer 2015. The first step for this event was the cutting oats and binding of sheaves after which several of the neighbors tried their hands at stacking the sheaves into stooks. In no time at all the small field was full of little tent like mounds which will be gathered later and used for next year's Thresherman’s Show held each August long weekend in Yorkton. Matthew is an avid volunteer at the museum where he gets to work on the machines and display their abilities for others to learn about how things were done on farms in our area back in the great grandparent’s day. After the stooking was complete it was time for everyone’s favorite event..lunch. Everyone attending brought something to add to the pot-luck lunch along with barbequed meats supplied by the Webers. Visiting and eating lasted for about an hour and Matthew says that was one of the main reasons to invite people as he says that some of the nearest neighbors he only sees to wave at and he loves to see people gathered to visit. By the time lunch was done a few people had wandered back to the field and the old tractor was chugging away with long belts twisted and wound to the pulleys of the threshing machine. Two hay racks full of last year’s sheaves were driven close to the loading chute of the threshing machine and a couple of our local 4H’rs climbed up on the racks and gave it their best efforts to keep the machine filled with sheaves. All the spectators admired them for trying and were also quite happy that, though the sun was fully out by this time, there was a very nice breeze to help keep the chaff blowing away from the people and helping to keep everyone comfortable. Another newer model John Deere tractor powered a square baler set close to the chaff pile so you could see all the steps in one day; from cutting, binding, stooking, threshing, bale making and watching the oats flowing into the cart, Matthew will use the grain for his pigs and chickens, the bales will be bedding for his animals as well as comfy seating for the next year’s event and the sheaves will bide their time, stored for next year’s Thresherman's show as well as the Weber Old Time Threshing Day 2016. Entertainment was there for all, visiting, sharing the pot- luck lunch, watching the proceedings, and helping with stooking and bale making, There was no need for a bouncy-castle or face painting for the kids as they had plenty to do, climbing the bales, running up and down the hill and scooting through the trees as well as the added treat of about 5 of this spring's kid friendly kittens which looked to be enjoying the attentions of the kitten friendly kids!
