Expo MRT Station

Appointment:1997
Completion:2000
Area:7,164m
Capacity:17000 passengers at peak
times
Client:Land Transport Authority

Two dramatic roof structures announce the station: a 38-metre-diameter

stainless-steel disc covering the ticket hall, and a 200-metre-long ellipse clad in titanium that will last a hundred years - which shelters the passenger
concourse. These shapes overlap to dynamic visual effect. In one of the
warmest climates in the world the choice of roof materials also has an
environmental significance. The stainless-steel soffit reflects daylight into the
concourse, while the titanium cladding deflects the sun's rays, thus helping to
create a microclimate on the platforms that is up to four degrees cooler than
the outside temperature.

Environmentally, the stations open form has other

benefits, encouraging a cooling flow of air through the
building.
The choice of roof materials also has
an environmental significance.
Internally, the polished metal surface
reflects daylight down through the
building, minimising the need for
artificial lighting, while externally, the
cladding deflects the suns rays, thus
helping to create a microclimate on
the platforms that is refreshingly up to
four degrees cooler than the outside
temperature.
