    Maleseahorsesplayasmuchapartinnurturingembryosduringpregnancyashumanmomsorotherfemalemammals,suggestsanewstudy.
    Previouslytheirrole,otherthanaspouchprovider,waslargelyamystery.
    Whenitcomestobreeding,seahorseshavemoreincommonwithhumansthanpreviouslythought,saidresearchersfromtheUniversityof

    ofbiologicalsciences.
    Seahorsebabiesgetalotofnutrientsviatheeggyolkprovidedbytheirmothers.Butthepouchofthefathershasalsoevolvedtomeetthe
    complexchallengesofprovidingadditionalnutrientsandimmunologicalprotection,andensuringgasexchangeandwasteremoval.
    DrWhittingtonandcolleaguesfoundmaleseahorsesareabletodelivernutrientstotheirdevelopingembryos,particularlyenergyrichlipids,
    andcalciumtoallowthemtobuildtheirtinyskeletons.Itislikelythesenutrientsaresecretedinthebroodpouchandthenabsorbedby
    embryos.
    Theyalsofoundmaleseahorsesgeneexpressionduringpregnancywassimilartothatofhumans.Thesimilaritiesbetweenseahorse,
    mammalandlizardpregnanciesrevealedinthepaperwarrantfurtherinvestigation,DrWhittingtonadded.Thepaperwaspublishedinthe
    journalMolecularBiologyandEvolution.
