Unit 3 Assignment 1

John Beattie

Primary research;
Primary research consists of experiments, investigations and tests that are gathered first hand rather than from
sources from the internet, magazines or newspaper. Here are examples of primary research.

ProsPrimary research is your own work and is much more reliable than using secondary research.
You can do what you chose to carry out the research e.g. Interviews, questionnaires, surveys or analysis and
observation.

ConsCarrying out the research can be very time consuming.

When you finish the research, the information you have gathered may be outdated.

Interviews;
An interview is a one to one or a group discussion on a certain topic, they are useful because they give you
knowledge of what others think on the topic as well as yours.

ProsInterviews can be done through video calls (Skype) or over the telephone, this means that there is no travel
cost and is much more efficient.
When doing a face to face interview, your interviewer can get an idea of your personality and how well youll
work in that environment.

ConsParticipating In a group interview your ideas may already be asked by

other people within the group and you might not be able to express your
opinions.
Telephone and video interviews might be shorter because the
interviewer might have to be somewhere or might have something to do,
so you have to sell yourself fast!

Questionnaires;
A questionnaire is a bunch of questions with choices of answers, the information is then turned into
percentages and data.

Types of questionnairesStructured- Concrete questions, well prepared.

Unstructured- Very flexible.
Open ended- Respondent is able to express their opinions.
Close ended- Respondent is very limited in terms of answers.
Mixed- Questions are both open and closed.
Pictorial- Pictures are used to promote interest in the answers.

ProsQuestionnaires can be created for specific purposes e.g.

political views or market research.
Closed ended questions can result in lot of data which can
be turned into graphs/charts, this means the results can be
analysed quickly and used for research.

ConsQuestions that are used in the questionnaire might not be

able efficient enough to produce data that can be used.
If the questions are poorly designed then the data collected
from the answers will be unreliable, this will result in
creating a whole new questionnaire and distributing them
all again.

Audience panels;
Audience panels consists of a panel of people interacting the audience e.g. a convention or a conference. They
can be in person or virtual.

Example of an audience panelComic con is a perfect example of an audience panel, it has many different panels
on for the duration of the event, a lot of people attend these panels to find out
what the next season of a TV show has to offer and they can interact with the cast
and producers. They can ask them questions and most will get answered. A lot of
experts on the show will attend the event so they can gather data and write up a
summary of their predictions and they can share it with the other viewers who
couldnt attend.
