Unit One: Perspectives of the Past

QuizLearning Target 2
I can identify the types of distortion in common world map projections and determine suitable uses of
each projection.
Part I. Below are the four map projections we examined in class and descriptions of each projection. Match the
projection with its description by writing the letter of the correct description on the line next to the projection
name.

_______ Robinson

_______ Gall-Peters

_______ Goode Homolosine

_______ Mercator

A. In this map projection, relative size is sacrificed for true direction. A line drawn between any two points on
this map represents the true direction on a compass. However, this projection increasingly distorts the size
of objects as latitude increases from the Equator to the poles.
B. In this map projection, shape is sacrificed for relative size. The size (or area) of objects is correct relative to
one another, but this results in distorted shapes: features near the Equator are stretched vertically, while
those near the poles are flattened horizontally.
C. In this map projection, everything is distorted a little bit. Because no one aspect is distorted greatly, this
projection presents a reasonable picture of the world.
D. In this map projection, relative size or area is correct, and shapes are well preserved. In order to make this
happen, the grid is interrupted.

Part II. Which is a more accurate representation of the earths surface: a globe or a map? In a clearly written
paragraph, make a claim, then defend your claim with evidence and reasoning.

Part III. Choose two of the four map projections we learned about in class and discuss the suitable purpose of
each. Also explain why the purpose is suitable for that particular map projection.
