Antarctica

Fact File

Antarctica is the Earths southmost continent containing the South Pole. It is 14

million km. Antarctica is the coldest, highest, driest, largest and windiest
continent on Earth also. Antarcticas coldest temperature was -135.8F and the
hottest temperature was 54.14C.
Antarctica is 2% barren rock and 98% covered in ice sheets. It has many
snowcapped mountains, icebergs, glaciers, trenches, ice shelves, and it is a polar
desert!
Captain James Cook and his crew were the Nirst men to cross the Antarctic Circle
in January, 1773. A while after, on the 27th of January, 1820, a Russian named
Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen was the Nirst person to see the Antarctic
continent. On 1821, Bellingshausen returns to the Antarctic Sea and discovers
Peter 1 Island and Alexander Islands.
After some years, in 1839, an Englishman named John Balleny sails from New
Zealand and discovers the Balleny Islands. Then in January, 1840, Lt. Charles
Wilkes saw an area now named Wilkes Land. In 1895, Henryk Bull lands on Cape
Adare. A member of the party, Carsten Borchgrevink, found lichen on an
offshore island, giving the Nirst signs of plant life.
On February, 1902, German Erich von Drygalski and the crew of the Gauss
discovered Wilhelm II Land. And that wasnt the whole history of Antarctica.
