Active Transport

Endocytosis- a cell transports

molecules into the cell by engulfing
them in the cell using energy.

Exocytosis- a cell transports molecules

out of the cell by engulfing them in
the cell using energy.

Concentration gradient- the

density of a substance in a solution.
Hydrophobic- inner membrane that
cannot mix with water.
Hydrophilic- outer membrane that
can mix with water.

Inner membrane: HydrophobicCANNOT be w/ H2O

Outer membrane: Hydrophilic- CAN be
w/ H2O

Passive Transport

Diffusion- ions/molecules moving

across the membrane from high to
low concentration with no energy
required.
Osmosis- Movement of WATER
across the membrane
Permeable-Allowing liquids or gases
to pass through it.

Diffusion: Movement of molecules from high

concentration to low concentration, WITH
concentration gradient
Osmosis: Movement of water molecules
from high concentration to low concentration,
WITH concentration gradient.
Active transport: movement of molecules
from low concentration to high concentration,
AGAINST concentration gradient.
Equilibrium: Molecules are at the same
concentration and flow in and out equally
(Isotonic)

Hypotonic- movement of water into a cell

Hypertonic-movement of water out of a cell
