Throughthisclass,Ihavelearnedthereisabalancebetweenaninquirydesigned
investigationsandinstructionalguidinginconcepts.Allowingstudentstoquestionhowand
whyisthedrivingforcebehindactuallearninginscienceandmath.Ihavelearnedtoallowtime
forstudentstoquestionthephenomenaandtoconceiveideasofhowtheconceptsofscience
areatplaythroughexperimentation.Ialsohavelearnedthatitisimportanttofollowupon
studentideas,makingthemresponsiblefortheirlearning.Theopportunitiesforfreereflection
eachweekhashelpedmesolidifymyquestionsandownlearningofconcepts,aswellas
commentandabsorbtheinquiryactivitiesmyclassmates.
OneotherimportantaspectIhavelearnedthroughthisclassaboutbeingabletoteach
scienceismyownlearningandunderstandingofscience:contentmaterial.Thiscourseopened
myeyestohowmuchthereistoknow,tobeabletoanswerquestionsstudentshave.Being
abletounderstandthecontentonadeeperlevelthanfactualknowledgeispertinenttobeing
abletoexplaintheprocessestostudentswholittletoknowformalbaseknowledgeonthe
subjectmatterotherthanwhattheyexperienceintheworld.
Inothermethodscourses,therearemultiplewaystoassessstudentlearning.Inthis
course,theprofessorhasemphasizedtheimportanceofassessingthehandsonlearningofthe
studentsinmultipleformsallowingstudentstodoscienceisthewaytomakethelearninga
memorableandmeaningfulexperience.Studentscanbeassessedontheirlabwriteupsand
participation,shortanswerandessaytests,charts,tables,diagrams,presentations,journals,
learning/lablogs,creativeexpressions(posters,books,etc),discussions,andothermeansof
productsforstudentsdemonstratetheirunderstands(orexpresstheirconcernsor
misconceptions.)Ifeel,insciencelearning,thegradeisntnecessarilywhatisimportant.Itisthe
processoflearningaconceptthoroughlythroughdifferentmediumsandhavingthestudentbe
abletorelayconcepts/processesintheirownwordsintheirownway.
Scienceisexcitingandmysterious.Havingunderstandinginhowournaturalworld
worksandtheknowledgeoftheprocessesandconceptsthatoccuraroundusdailyallowsusto
haveadeeper,richerappreciationforthewonderintheworldwelivein.Ibegantolearnand
appreciatescienceinlatehighschoolandthroughmycollegecourses.However,inthisclass,I
feelIhavedevelopedagreaterappreciationforteachingscienceonalevelstudentscan
understand.Childrenarecuriousandwillappreciatethegivenresponsibilityfortheirlearningif
weaseducatorsmakeitinterestingandworthwhile.Scienceshouldbeanauthenticexperience,
fullofdeeplearningandintrigue.
