The solos sections at measures 4964 and 6580 can be opened up for additional soloists. The soloists may use the concert
D Dorian scale for their harmonic reference. Students can explore the many ideas available to them through using the
Dorian mode. Its a relatively safe means for improvisation for younger or less experienced students. Regardless of the
number of soloists, the final soloists should be alto sax 1 (measures 4564) and trumpet 1 (6580).
The rhythm section parts are fully notated for piano, bass, and drums. The guitar part has many slashes to indicate a
basic quarter-note comping pattern. The guitarist should dynamically stay under the ensemble when comping but can
play out a bit on the written lines.

Terry White is a retired music

educator having taught instrumental
music at all levels from beginning
band to college jazz ensembles
for over 34 years. He has been a
composer, performer and bandleader
in the Portland, Maine area. Terry has
written for many idioms including
the Portland Symphony Orchestra,
marching band, jazz ensemble and
concert band. His music has been
performed at the Mid West clinic in
Chicago, listed on the NYSMA list
and is a published composer. Terry
presently writes and performs with
the Portland Jazz Orchestra and is
an active adjudicator and festival
conductor.

The line that begins in measure 5 in the bass part, the left hand of the piano, and also in the bari sax is an important
characteristic element of the arrangement. The line should give a sense of curiosity and funkiness as well as provide
contrast to the cool feeling that the melody provides. In listening to the various recordings of Jive Samba stated above,
the great arrangers all seem to use some idea of a unique bass line.

The eighth note on the and of beat 1 should be played short, but not staccato. More weight can be given to the note.

Although the tune is not complex, there are several rhythmic issues that may need to be addressed with younger
students. The syncopated rhythm in measure 1 and reoccurring throughout the arrangement is not difficult but will need
to be articulated correctly in order to stay in the appropriate style of the idiom.

I hope your students have fun with Jive Samba.

There are several important recordings of Jive Samba in addition to the Phenix record label recording by the Adderley
brothers. Several well-known arrangers have recorded it, including Quincy Jones on Hip Hits in 1963, Thad Jones on
Central Park North in 1969, and more recently, Patrick Williams recorded his arrangement of it in 1986 on the album New
York Band: 10th Avenue.

Nat Adderleys Jive Samba is from one of the final recordings he and his brother Julian Cannonball Adderley recorded
in 1975. It is a classic jazz/rock tune and very accessible for younger musicians both melodically and harmonically.
