tens, and ones
2.2B- Use standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 1,200.
Objective: students will be able to decompose whole numbers into the place value using
standard word form and estimating real numbers using number relationships by doing
different learning activities

Procedure:

Activity #1
Objective: Students will be able to add, subtract and tell base-ten numbers by
playing a game
1. Teacher will give all students their Watch, think, and color worksheet, which
is their number chart.
2. Ask students to get the colors: red, Blue, Orange and green.
3. Let students know to watch the board where they will be a PowerPoint
presentation, think about the number, and color the space indicated
4. The very last slide shows what their chart should look like if they followed
the clues correctly.
5. As they get closer to reveling the number the game goes by faster.

Activity #2
1. The teacher will give each group 110 beads and 10 pipe cleaners.
2. Students will put the beads in the pipe cleaners using 10 beads for each
one that will represent the units, until they get 10 groups of 10 units each
group.
3. After that they will put together 10 groups to form 100 units or 10 groups
of 10 units, so they will understand that 10 groups of 10 form a hundred.

4. Then, the teacher will ask for a number that has tens and ones on it, and
the students using the handout will put the correct groups of beads and
units in their place.
Activity #3
1. The teacher will give each student a Styrofoam cup.
2. Divide the top of the cups into 10 equal sections.
3. Use a different marker color for each cup
4. Write 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 clockwise around the rim to make the ones
cup.
5. Keep the numbers evenly spaced on cups.
6. Then write 0, 00, or 000 after each number under the rim of the cup,
depending on the place value.
7. The teacher will give each group of students 3 cups, one for the ones, and
other for the tens and a last one for the hundreds.
8. They will be asked to put the cups together and then round them so the rim
of the cups move and they get different numbers.
9. Students will have to write down the different numbers that they get in the
handout putting each unit in its corresponding place.
10. They also can separate the cups to look at the one, tens and hundreds
separated and with their corresponding 0s.
Activity #4
1. Teacher will divide the students into groups of four or five each.
2. Each student will receive two pieces of paper, one to work out the
equations and the other to keep score.
3. Indicate to the students that on the paper to keep score were they will
divide the paper into two creating a line vertically. One side will be
labeled guesses and the other estimates.
4. Teacher will give each group four to five cards with the number facing
down.
5. When the teacher indicates one student from the group will select a card
without turning it over.
6. The students will then guess what the number the card has.
7. On the count of three the card will be turned over.
8. The players will then calculate the difference between their guess and the
actual number in the card and record it in the guess column.
9. The same process will be repeated until there are no cards left.
10. Once they have finished, the students will estimate the amount of points
from guessing that they have earned, without doing the actual addition.

11. Have them add up their actual guess score, and calculate the difference
between their estimate and their actual score.
12. Record the difference in the estimate column.
13. At the end the scores from both columns will be added, and the student
with the lowest score wins.
Activity #5
1. Teacher will arrange the number boards on the floor.
2. The students will then be divided into pairs.
3. A number card will be given to each pair of students
4. Once the students see the number in their card, they will need to estimate
to what real number on the porters is their number close to.
5. After they have reasoned abut an answer one of the partners will have to
go to the poster that contains the number that they consider is the correct
one.
6. Once every group has an answer, the students will be asked why they
consider that that is the correct answer.
7. This process will be repeated for about three to four times.
Activity #6
Objective: Students will be able to produce two digit sums using ten frames
charts.

Teacher will give each students three base ten frame chats.
Give each student 30 bingo chips
Pass out one sheet of paper and a pencil
Model to the students what they will be doing. First write down a sum on
the board then use chips to solve it. Example: 14+10 therefore you will use
three base ten frames boxes. In one box you will put ten chips, in the second
box you will put another ten chips, and in the last box you will put four
chips. When youre done you will add them all together and that will be
your answer.
Tell the students to write down the addition problem on the paper then solve
it using chips.
Write down different two digit addition problems on the board
Walk around to see if the students need help.
When they are all done give the students a ten frame worksheet as an
activity assessment and tell them to count each ten frame and write the
number on the bottom.

9. The assessment reinforces what they have learned and teacher knows if the
students need additional help.

Closure Activity
Objective: students will be able to Decompose numbers into thousands,
hundreds, tens and ones and to use standard word form and expanded by playing a
game.

Procedure
1. Teacher will hide the place value cards around the room without children knowing
where she puts them.
2. Teacher will put the students in teams of 4 or individually depending on the size of
the class.
3. The teacher will then explain to the students that they have to look around the room
for cards that have a problem to solve on it.
4. After they solve the problem they go up to the board where the Place value posting
sheet will be taped and write down their answer with their color marker
5. Only one person can go up at the time from each team
6. The team that has the most correct answers up in the board wins.
7. Give the students a little incentive as a price.

Assessment:
8. Students will complete a whole number quiz, containing 9 questions in
relation to the activities.
