Content Area: Whole Numbers
Subject: Mathematics

technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and
number sense as appropriate, to solve problems
2.2A- use concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose
numbers up to 1,200 in more than one way as a sum of so many thousands, hundreds,
tens, and ones
2.2B- Use standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 1,200.
Objective: students will be able to decompose whole numbers into the place value using
standard word form and estimating real numbers using number relationships by doing
different learning activities

Activity #1
Objective: Students will be able to add, subtract and tell base-ten numbers by
playing a game
1. Teacher will give all students their Watch, think, and color worksheet, which
is their number chart.
2. Ask students to get the colors: red, Blue, Orange and green.
3. Let students know to watch the board where they will be a PowerPoint
presentation, think about the number, and color the space indicated
4. The very last slide shows what their chart should look like if they followed
the clues correctly.
5. As they get closer to reveling the number the game goes by faster.
Activity #2
1. The teacher will give each group 110 beads and 10 pipe cleaners.
2. Students will put the beads in the pipe cleaners using 10 beads for each
one that will represent the units, until they get 10 groups of 10 units each
group.
3. After that they will put together 10 groups to form 100 units or 10 groups
of 10 units, so they will understand that 10 groups of 10 form a hundred.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Teacher will give each students three base ten frame chats.
Give each student 30 bingo chips
Pass out one sheet of paper and a pencil
Model to the students what they will be doing. First write down a sum on
the board then use chips to solve it. Example: 14+10 therefore you will use
three base ten frames boxes. In one box you will put ten chips, in the second
box you will put another ten chips, and in the last box you will put four
chips. When youre done you will add them all together and that will be
your answer.
Tell the students to write down the addition problem on the paper then solve
it using chips.
Write down different two digit addition problems on the board
Walk around to see if the students need help.
When they are all done give the students a ten frame worksheet as an
activity assessment and tell them to count each ten frame and write the
number on the bottom.
Closure Activity
Objective: students will be able to Decompose numbers into thousands,
hundreds, tens and ones and to use standard word form and expanded by playing a
game.
Procedure
1. Teacher will hide the place value cards around the room without children knowing
where she puts them.
2. Teacher will put the students in teams of 4 or individually depending on the size of
the class.
3. The teacher will then explain to the students that they have to look around the room
for cards that have a problem to solve on it.
4. After they solve the problem they go up to the board where the Place value posting
sheet will be taped and write down their answer with their color marker
5. Only one person can go up at the time from each team
6. The team that has the most correct answers up in the board wins.
7. Give the students a little incentive as a price.
Assessment:
8. Students will complete a whole number quiz, containing 9 questions in
relation to the activities.
