Dear Parents and students;

My name is Mrs. Danyelle Hill. Students, I will be your teacher for second grade this year! I am
currently on maternity leave and will return January 4, 2016. Mr. Mike Turnbaugh will be
teaching my class until I return. He is very experienced and knowledgeable in the area of
education. I know you will enjoy working with him throughout the fall/winter semester. I would
like to briefly tell you about myself. My home is in Selma where I live with my husband Rick,
daughter Mackenzie and cat Sox. I attended Campbell University; one of my professors was Dr.
Harris, the former Executive Director of Neuse Charter School. I have had a number of
opportunities to work with children just like you. I enjoy working with children, and I love
watching them learn and grow! I look forward to learning about each and every one of you! We
are going to have an exciting year together!
Parents, it gives me great pleasure to have your child in my class this year. I am really excited
and look forward to a successful school year in teaching and working with your child. As you
know, Second Grade is an important year in your childs elementary education. It is a year of
increasing demands and more rigorous challenges. Your son/daughter will build and refine many
foundational skills that will help him/her be successful in the upcoming challenges he/she will be
facing.
As your childs teacher, I will do my best to work with you and help your child learn the skills
necessary to make him/her perform even better this year. With your support and assistance, I
am confident that your child will have a smooth, fruitful and enjoyable school year.
If you wish to speak with Mr. Turnbaugh or myself, dont hesitate to call us at 919-626-2300 or
email us at mturnbaugh@neusecharterschool.org or dhill@neusecharterschool.org.
Thank you very much. I am so excited to be working with you!
Sincerely,

Mrs. Danyelle Hill

Dear Families,
Welcome to second grade! Thank you so much for coming to Orientation Night! I look forward
to an exciting and challenging year. We have many wonderful learning opportunities planned for
the school year and will need your help and support for these to be effective. We view our
challenge as a team effort involving us, the teachers; you, the parents; and the students. If we
approach each situation as a team, your child will grow to his/her full potential. Please read ALL
of the information below to familiarize yourself with some classroom and school policies and
procedures. You may want to keep this in a safe place for future reference.

STUDENT DAY (8:15 3:15): Children may be dropped off between 7:55 am-8:15 am.
Children will be counted tardy if they arrive in the classroom after 8:15 am. In order for your
child to succeed, attendance is essential. Excessive absences will only be an obstacle for your
childs education, so lets be sure he or she is here unless he/she is truly sick. Dismissal is at
3:15pm and student pick up is from 3:15pm until 3:45pm. Please try to plan vacations when the
children have days off.
TRANSPORTATION: Please be sure to send a note each time there is a change in how
your child will go home. Please call the school to make a transportation change.
LUNCH: We will eat in our classroom or at the picnic tables from 12:30 pm-1:00pm. You will
need to provide your childs lunch each day. Students will not have access to refrigerators or
microwaves.
SNACKS: We will have a snack time each morning. Therefore, I ask that you send a healthy
snack for your child. Suggested snacks are fruit, popcorn, raw vegetables, crackers, cheese,
etc. Children have such energy as it is sweets only add to it! Please, no candy, and send bottled
water if your child would like something to drink.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS: Parents are a vital part of our team. If you are able in any way, please
volunteer. Such opportunities include reading with children, assisting during literacy workshop
time, coloring and cutting materials, classroom parties, and field trips. There will be help
needed both inside and outside the classroom. Please schedule a time to volunteer in the
classroom.
AGENDAS and COMMUNICATION FOLDERS: Your child will bring home a homework binder
every day. A newsletter/homework assignment sheet will be placed in the binder on Monday.
There will also be a smiley dot located in the students binder/agenda. Their behavior will be
shown each day by the color located in the binder/agenda. Please check the folder for
important classroom and school notices. Your child should bring this binder/agenda to school
EVERY day. Please be sure to sign your childs smiley in the binder/agenda, homework grid,
reading log and math facts calendar. They will not be able to go to the Treaure Box
unless their Smiley binder/agenda, Homework grid, reading log and math facts calendar
have been signed.
HOMEWORK = AT HOME LEARNING: Your child can expect homework each night. The weekly
newsletter with homework assignments will go home with your child every Monday. All written
homework will be placed in the homework folder and will be due the following day unless
otherwise specified. A typical week will include math, reading and spelling homework. Homework
assignments should not last more than 30-45 minutes (not including reading). All second
graders are expected to read for at least 15 minutes each night. Please let me know if
homework takes your child longer or if he/she is having difficulties with homework. Your childs

math and reading homework will be located in the blue homework folder and their spelling
homework will be located in the orange spelling folder. The assignments will be on the
newsletter/ homework grid in the blue homework folder.

TAKE-HOME MONDAY FOLDERS: Each Monday, your child will take home a folder with school
work from the previous week. This folder will also contain a sheet of paper for you to sign
indicating that you have reviewed your childs work and discussed the papers with him/her.
There is a space for you to make comments about your childs work. Please be sure to sign and
return the papers that are marked Please sign and return after you have reviewed them
with your child. All other papers may be kept at home.
STUDENT WORK: Please review the work your child brings home and discuss it with him/her.
Our first few weeks of school may seem simple to your child. This is to help your child feel
comfortable with being back in school, to feel successful in what he/she is doing, to learn the
routine of a new classroom, and to assess the needs of each child.
CLASS RULES:
1. Listen when others are talking.
2. Follow directions.
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
4. Work quietly and do not disturb others.
5. Show respect for school and personal property.
6. Work and play in a safe manner.
SMILEY CHART(Agenda)/Treasure Box: We follow the Neuse Charter School Expectations. Any
actions contrary to the Neuse Charter School expectations or our class rules requires your child to
change his/her smiley. We start off with our smileys showing stars in their eyes and/or a green
face. Then poor choices make a smiley change to a regular smiley face/yellow face, then a sad
face/purple face, and then an upset face/red face. This behavior system will be discussed in
further detail later in this packet. However, here is a shortened version of the behavior
management system. The consequences are as follows:
Stars in the eyes smiley face: SUPER DAY! -- Green
Regular smiley face: Warning student and teacher will have a conference about behavior choices.
-- Yellow
Sad face: Timeout in the classroom and phone call or written communication sent home -- Purple
Upset face: Timeout in another classroom, think sheet reflection that is to be signed by the
parent, and a call home Red
The Second Grade discipline plan for behavior is a Smiley Binder/(Agenda)/Treasure Box system
based on rules, rewards, and consequences.
Rewards: Every other week students will be allowed to go to the treasure box for good behavior.
Students must have been on green 8 out of 10 days and have their homework binders/agendas,
reading log, math facts sheet and Monday folders signed every day/week.

Consequences:
Pull/Flip Smiley
Sign Timeout Book
Note/Call Home
Office Time Out
If a student has had a verbal warning and continued to misbehave they will flip their Smiley to
yellow. This will be marked in the students Smiley Tracker. If a student has to sign the Timeout
book there will be a purple or red dot in their Smiley binder/agenda along with a Reflection Sheet.
If this is the case we ask that the parent speaks with their child about the classroom rules and how
to avoid having to sign the Timeout book.

OTHER REWARDS: Each time the class or student gets a compliment they get a marble to
place in a jar. When we fill the jar we will have a class celebration.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS: Each month I hope to send home a book order giving you the
opportunity to purchase quality books, software, and learning games. Scholastic offers the
BEST prices for books and games. When you order, our class gets points for every dollar
ordered. I use these points to add to our classroom book collection. Checks for book orders
should be made payable to Scholastic unless otherwise noted. Please look on the back of the
order form for the deadline.
DONATIONS, PLEASE!: We will be using a variety of items throughout the year for Math,
Language Arts, Centers, extra snacks for those who forget and other classroom needs. If you
have any extra of the following, we would be glad to have them in our class:
Skittles & Smarties/Sweet tarts
Ziploc bags (gallon)
Wrapped candy
Vanilla wafers, goldfish crackers, pretzels
Sticky notes
Baby wipes/Clorox wipes

Colored copy paper

Items for the Treasure Box

STUDENT TEACHER: We will have a student teacher every day to be the classroom helper.
Students will take turns, in alphabetical/number order, to be the daily student helper.
DRESS CODE: School-wide standards on student attire are intended to help students concentrate on
schoolwork, reduce discipline problems and improve school order. The Board of Directors has approved
the following dress code for all NCS students:
Appearance Policy:

Suggestive or provocative clothing should not be worn.

Graphic language or suggestive, provocative messages or art are not allowed on any clothing.
Pants, shorts, or skirts worn below the beltline are not allowed.
Under garments and underwear are not to be exposed- no sagging jeans or pants or exposing tops.
All shorts, skirts, dresses must come to at least mid thigh.
No cut-off shirts or half shirts are allowed. Shirts must come to and cover the full torso.
Hats and sunglasses should not be worn in the classroom or inside buildings.
Tank tops, spaghetti straps, tube or halter-tops may not be worn under any circumstances. See

through shirts are not permitted.

Facial jewelry, such as eyebrow rings, nose rings, lip rings, and tongue studs are not appropriate

and must not be worn during school hours.

Torso body piercings with visible jewelry or jewelry that can be seen through or under clothing

must not be worn during school hours.

Excessive tattoos and similar body art must be covered.
No holes in jeans or sagging of pants/shorts.

Students are encouraged to wear NCS shirts especially on Friday to show school spirit. Throughout the
year NCS will have special attire days such as field trips whereby everyone may wear different outfits
appropriate to the occasion. The Dress Code will be enforced and non-compliance will result in a
parent/guardian contact and the student will be excluded from school activities until acceptable clothing
is provided. Any student deemed in violation of the dress code shall be required to change into
appropriate clothing or make arrangements to have appropriate clothing brought to school
immediately. In this case, there shall be no further penalty. If it continues to be a problem, then the
student may be subject to other disciplinary action as outlined in the school discipline policy.

FIELD TRIPS: Throughout the year, the second grade team will plan field trips. Field trips are
fun learning experiences for children, teachers, and parents. However, because we, as a school,
do not have buses to transport the children and carpooling is such a liability to
parents/teachers/ and the school, when we attend off site field trips, each parent or
guardian must accompany the child. As field trips are in the planning stage, you will be notified
by a letter located in your childs blue homework folder. Please return all permission slips and
money for field trips in before or by the requested date.
WATER IN THE CLASSROOM POLICY: We request that parents send their students to
school with a bottle of water every day for hydration and good health. Juice and milk are
discouraged as we often eat lunch in the rooms. Juice and milk can be messy when spilled. Soda
is not allowed.
REACHING ME: If you need to get in touch with me, please call before 8:15 a.m. or after 3:30
p.m. During the day you may leave a message with the school secretary. I will respond to any
notes sent in your childs homework folder. You may also contact me by e-mail at
dhill@neusecharterschool.org.

ANOTHER FORM OF COMMUNICATION: You may sign up for free texts that allow me to
send corrections to homework, important information, or reminders to your phone. To join you
will send a text to (754-227-2537) and text the words at @2c9a64 or you can email
2c9a64@mail.remind.com.
Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation. I look forward to an exciting year with
you and your child.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Danyelle Hill

Behavior Management explanation

Please be sure to sign and return the last page!
Behavior Management Plan
We will be using a behavior system that is similar to a stoplight. The student will begin the day with
his/her smiley on green. A student that stays on green all day has had an excellent day. When a
student is given a verbal warning about breaking a rule he/she will write their name on the board.
The next time the child is spoken to they will flip their smiley to yellow. There is no consequence for
moving to yellow, since it is just a warning. The third time a student is warned about breaking a rule
he/she has to move their smiley to purple and sign the time out book. The consequence will be
timeout in the classroom and phone call or written communication sent home. When a student is
spoken to a fourth time for breaking a rule, he/she will move their smiley to red and sign the time
out book as well. The consequence for this will be timeout in the classroom, think sheet reflection
that is to be signed by the parent, and a call home. A child who continues to break the rules and be
disruptive will be sent to the office. A child who is severely disruptive or severely breaks a rule will
be sent straight to the office, for such things as fighting, bullying or harassment, disrespectful
behavior, and destroying school property. Please talk to your child about the rules and be sure that
they understand them. So you are informed about your childs behavior, he/she will bring home
his/her homework binder/agenda with a smiley located in their agenda that will show how he/she did
for the day. The teacher will make comments as needed to let you know about your childs behavior.

Please initial the agenda/binder daily and return to school. Please discuss with your child his/her
daily behavior. Dont forget to praise good behavior! A child that has been on green 8 out of 10 days
and all documents have been signed will be allowed to visit the treasure box. (Treasure box will be
visited every other week.) If the child is on green for an entire month and has all documents signed
and returned daily/weekly will be given a homework pass at the end of the month. This is all done to
encourage good behavior. With everyones help, we can have our class run smoothly and help each
child learn to their full potential.
The Second Grade discipline plan for behavior is a Smiley Binder/Agenda/Treasure Box system
based on rules, rewards, and consequences.
Rules:
1. Listen when others are talking.
2. Follow directions.
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
4. Work quietly and do not disturb others.
5. Show respect for school and personal property.
6. Work and play in a safe manner.
Rewards:
Green smileys are earned by good behavior, bringing back signed weekly work, completing homework,
completing reading logs, and having their Smiley Tracker signed every night. If a student stays on
green for the whole month and has all items signed/returned at the correct time they will receive 1
homework pass at the end of the month.
Consequences:
Pull Smiley
Sign Time Out/Cougar consequence book
Note/Call Home
Office Time Out
If a student has had a verbal warning and continues to misbehave they will flip their Smiley to
yellow. This will be marked in the students Smiley binder/agenda. If a student has to sign the
consequence book there will be a purple or red dot in their Smiley binder/agenda along with a
Reflection Sheet. If this is the case we ask that the parent speaks with their child about the
classroom rules and how to avoid having to sign the consequence book.
