Assignment 1: Information Literacy

Assignment 1: Information Literacy

1. Use the Internet to find a Technology current event

article
I found my article on Techcrunch.com posted September 20 th 2015.
The article is titled, Drones Will Deliver Your Pizza, and Much Much More by
Jon Russell. The article discusses mobile technology, security and emerging
technology. (Russell, 2015)

2. Write a paragraph summarizing the article. (5 points)

My article discusses the concept of drones and how drones may be
able to be used for delivery of pizza and packages in the future. This article
talks about expanding the use of drones to public services. However, the
Federal Aviation Administration, who is responsible for the safety and
regulation of civil aviation, will not allow this this to take place until all the
kinks are worked out in terms of its safety. They are working to build drones
with a more sufficient design with the millions of dollars CyPhy Works has
raised for this project. (Russell, 2015)

3. Find two additional Internet articles on the same topic.

(4 points)
The key words I used were drones pizza delivery 2015, and drones
for public service 2015. I used both Google.com and Bing.com. I felt the
two search engines were equally good. I am a Google user, so for me, it was
very easy to use and navigate around. I thought I would have a harder time
using Bing.com, which I am unfamiliar with, but it wasnt too much different
from Google. Everything was pretty straight forward. I think the only
difference was the fact that Google seemed to pull up newer webpages and
articles than Bing.com did. I had to scroll through a lot of June/ July stories
before finding anything from this past month.

4. TRAAP your sources. Evaluation of one internet article.

(8 points)
1. The Age of Drones has Arrived Quicker than the Laws that Govern Them
was written on September 10, 2015. (Oduntan, 2015)
2. This article definitely relates to my topic and answers more questions about
the various uses of drones for public services.

3. This article was written by Gbenga Oduntan, of The Conversation. The
Conversation is an independent, not-for-profit, news and information service
sourced from the university and research sector, and professionally edited by
journalists. (Oduntan, 2015)
4. I would say their information is accurate because they source their
information from university scholars and researchers and they use facts and
evidence rather than opinions and conflicts of interest.
5. The purpose of this article was to inform. They gave many instances, facts,
hard evidence and dates of specific events in which drones were used. The
information was not biased at all. The material was very objective.

5. Find two scholarly journal articles on the same topic

from the CCBC library databases. (4 points)

I typed in drones and pizza to find my articles. Along with drones public
service and drones deliver
My articles were titles 101 Endangered Jobs by 2030 and Etc. Etc. Etc.
(Frey, 2015) (Etc 2015)
I used ProQuest Science Journals because it was listed under Science and
Technology and contained scholarly journals and full texts.

6. Compare the Internet and Journal articles. (5 points)

Write a paragraph comparing one Internet article and one journal article based
on the following:
The article on Fool.com was very similar to the article I found on ProQuest
Science Journals titled, Etc. Etc. Etc. Both of these articles talked about drones
and its potential for public services. Both talked about Amazon and how they
are working on experiments with drones to deliver their packages. In my
opinion, the internet article was much easier to find than the journals from the
librarys databases. It took me over an hour to find the scholarly journals in the
librarys databases compared to the fifteen minutes it took for me to find one on
the internet search engines. The internet was easier in finding more recent
articles than the librarys databases. At least for me, it was really hard to find
anything recent on my topic. A whole of lot clicking around was involved. The
articles from the CCBC library databases were easy in finding scholarly journals
because it gives you the option to refine your searches to only scholarly journals.
This helps to let me know that the author is qualified to write about the topic and
that the information is trustworthy. (Mattera, 2015) (Etc 2015)
