Swallowing and
Sucking Reflex

When anything is put in the mouth, babies at once

suck and swallow.

The rooting reflex

If one side of the babys cheek or mouth is gently

touched, the baby turns toward the touch and the mouth
prepares to suck.
When an object or finger touches the palm of the babys
hand, the hand automatically grasps it.

The grasp reflex

The stepping or
walking reflex

When held upright with their feet placed on a firm

surface, babies will make forward stepping movement.

The startle reflex

When babies are startled by a sudden loud noise or

bright light, theyll move their arms outward with elbows
bent and hands clenched.

The falling reflex

Any sudden feeling that gives the baby the feeling that
they are being dropped will make them fling their arms
out, open their hands and bring their arms back over the
chest as if to catch hold of something.
