Unit Duration

Stories of groups of people who migrated to Australia

6 weeks 8 lessons plus an excursion

(including from ONE Asian country) and the reasons they


migrated, such as World War II and Australian migration
programs since the war (ACHHK115)

Big Ideas/key concepts


The Key concepts I want students to learn are

Why does this learning matter?

The understanding of why the Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre


allows the student to gain an understanding of the circumstances that
Australia facing after WWII that they needed skilled workers and to
repopulate, it allows the child to recognise had Australia come to be
so multicultural and lastly it explains how this nation become exposed
to certain foods, different agricultural practices and the development
of structures for example different types of houses
Looking at the migration of the Chinese explains how migration
occurred before the war, the gold rush. However it also brings to light
the white Australia policy which explains how Australia wanted a
white nation. This is important to discuss and for students to have an
understanding of because it explains why there is large numbers of
migrants from certain countries for example Europe
By students understanding why people migrated to Australia (push
and pull factors) it allows them to gain an understanding of why
migration occurs, this task will also assist with developing empathy
within the student when looking at war struck countries, families
who left with nothing and need a safe place to live
It is important that students have an understanding that all migrant
experiences are different because it allows them to look at different
experience and therefore they are looking at different perspectives it

also allows the childs mind set to develop and therefore they
understand that just because one person had a bad experience it
doesnt mean that they all did
