POST-TEACHING
Reflections
The lesson went very well overall. It was a 45 minute lesson and it took the
students 43 minutes to complete. The students were very engaged and very well
behaved. The students were not afraid to ask for help when needed. I polled them
to see who enjoyed the activity and all but 2 students said they enjoyed it. All
students but 1 completed the activity in the time allowed and he has a LD so I gave
him an extra 10 minutes to work on it while the other students moved onto what
the cooperating teacher had for them to do. Only 1 student exhibited behavior
problems. She got into an argument with another student. I was able to stand in
between the two students desk and calm the problem down before it escalated. I
noticed she did better when I practiced close proximity with her. So I frequently
walked past her desk while she was working and if she was getting off task I was
able to easily redirect her with verbal prompts.
One thing I would have done differently with this lesson is to have explained topic
and closing sentences more thoroughly. I would explained how to use transition
words more thoroughly. After assessing the class activity, only 2 students properly
used transition words when introducing their point sentences.
Data Based Decision Making
After looking at the results of the data, I have concluded that the class progressed
overall. All but one student improved. The portion of the concept that was taught
that may need to be revisited at a later time is the difference between a topic
sentence and a closing sentence. 8 of the 22 students got these two sentence
mixed up on the assessment. I believe with a little more guided practice, the
students will master this concept.

The 3.8 Paragraph Model

A 3.8 paragraph is a paragraph that makes three points in the following eight sentences:
1. The topic sentence, which clearly states what the writer wants the reader to know or
understand after reading the paragraph. This idea is the controlling idea. In an essay, the
topic sentence of a body paragraph should directly support or develop your thesis
statement.
2. The first general statement, the first point supporting or developing the topic
sentence. Use transition words such as first, second, third, next, finally, etc
3. The first set of details, supporting the first general statement or point.
4. The second general statement, the second point supporting or developing the topic
sentence. Use transition words such as first, second, third, next, finally, etc
5. The second set of details, supporting the second general statement or point.
6. The third general statement, the third point supporting or developing the topic
sentence. Use transition words such as first, second, third, next, finally, etc
7. The third set of details, supporting the third general statement or point.
8. The concluding sentence that restates what the writer wants the reader to know or
understand after reading the paragraph (i.e., the controlling idea).

A general example of the 3.8 paragraph utilized in writing:

The fall is definitely my favorite season of the year. First, it is the most beautiful of the four
seasons. The leaves of the trees seem to explode into glorious colors: reds, oranges, golds, and
browns. Next, the temperature in the fall is perfect. The days in the low seventies let people
comfortably wear whatever clothes they like, and the nighttime temperatures make for a great
nights sleep. Finally, my favorite holiday of the year, Thanksgiving, is in the fall. It provides a
few days off in the middle of the first months of school to visit with friends and family while
enjoying delicious food. More than any other season, the fall is my favorite time of year.

Which paragraph is correct???? Why???
Name:______________________________

Review it the 3.8 way!!!

1.

Pick a movie you have recently seen that you either love or hate.

_________________________________________________________
2. Using your IPads, search on goggle to find three different movie reviews
about your chosen movie. The review can either be a critic review or a user
review. In your own words write down a short statement the critics have
said about your chosen movie on the lines below. Remember all three
reviews need to be either negative or positive, not both.
1. ________________________________________________
2. ________________________________________________

3. ________________________________________________
3. Now use the reviews to fill out the 8-Sentence Accordion Paragraph
Worksheet on the back of this page.
4. Once you have completed your Accordion Paragraph worksheet, you are
now ready to write your own 3.8 paragraph movie review. Write your 3.8
movie review using the information from your Accordion Paragraph
Worksheet on a blank sheet of paper. Remember to follow the correct
format of the 3.8 paragraph model.
