Introduction

Use of ICT as a
tuning in activity

Students on the floor in front of the smart board

Sunshine Online (level 1, Pauls Pet Graph) will be on the smart board
We will read through the story together, pointing out the different animals and the
number of people choosing that animal
How many people choose the cat?
The dog is how many peoples favourite animal?
What animal did these 3 people choose?

We will then do activity 1 which asks students to identify the number of each animal
chosen and which is the most popular
Can someone tell me the most popular animal?
Can someone tell me the least popular animal?
Which animal did 4 people choose?
Which animal did only 1 person choose?
What animals had the same number of people choose them?
I will ask volunteers to come up and answer the questions on the smart board by
clicking onto the answer they believe to be true we will discuss the answers chosen

B.

Development
(6 steps each with a focus question)

Whole class
sitting in a circle

to allow for

visibility of

demonstrations

C.

Students in a circle on the floor with cars in the middle

How can we group these cars? Have some students demonstrate different grouping
Which group is largest and smallest? How do you know?
Can I group the cars differently?
If I wanted to find out which cars are most popular, what could I do? (ask children what
one they liked best)
When I find out someones favourite car, how can I write it down? (tally)
Write down cars on the board and ask students what one they like best (create a tally)
Consolidation, practice, extension
(4 to 6 steps)

D.

While still on the floor, explain that we will do a survey about favourite fruits
Students will think about whether they like apples or oranges more
Students will then roam the room, asking 10 people if they like apples or oranges and
put a line in the tally for each response
After collecting the data, students return to the floor
I will explain how to transfer the tally data to a graph
Then students return to their tables to colour in their graphs, depending on their tally
results
Enabler
After I explain the graphing to the whole class, I will facilitate a small group of those
who may be having difficulties
Early Finishers- Extension Activities
Those who finish early can complete a grouping task where they must group a selection
of objects in as many different ways as they can

Use of open
questioning &
allowing
students to
develop
understanding of
their own

Allowing
students to be
physically
active and
participate in a
hands-on task
gets them
engaged and
helps in their
understanding
of the topic.

Allowing for
enabler and
extension
activities for
the varying
abilities in the
class

Closure

Students come back onto the floor, in a circle

Introduce some coloured objects
Ask students to group them into colours
Ask another student to physically arrange them into a graph
Which is the most popular colour & which is the least popular colour

Providing hands-on
activities for
students to represent
the concept of
graphing
