Introduction

Students need a safe and effective learning environment. I will create and maintain a
classroom management plan in order to develop such an environment. This plan will
include a classroom theme, protocols, rules and consequences.

I want my classroom to be a place where students look forward to attending. I will post
motivational and positive behavior posters on the wall and also provide a daily motivational
quote. Students will build each other up and give each other positive encouragement. We will
have class in multiple locations like the gym, classroom, and outside areas. Each environment
will be filled with positive energy and students will enjoy physical education.

Establishing Rules

Every classroom needs rules and protocols. I will establish my rules on the first day of class and
gym routines will be established the first class period we are in the gym. I will have a class
discussion about what they think some good rules would be to keep class fun and safe. This way
the students feel involved in the class and will be less likely to break the rules. Rule making and
consequences are a crucial part of keeping the class running efficiently. Classroom protocols
apply to each day of class throughout the year so students know what to do each day. The less
time we spend on rules and routines, the more time we will have for instruction and activities.
During the first week of school I will provide examples of what I dont want students to do and
4

acceptable behaviors. I will also walk them through our classroom routines and answer any
questions they may have.

Rules/Expectations

1. Be Nice!
Students should always be respectful of other classmates and teachers.
2. Always try your best!
Students will be asked to give their best effort in all activities.
3. Treat classmates, the teacher, and equipment with respect.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Do not damage school equipment used for physical education. If students
continually damage equipment, they will not get to use it for activities.
4. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes.
Students will be expected to wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing.
If a student does not have appropriate shoes or clothing, they might not be able
to fully participate in certain classroom activities.
5. Have Fun!
Physical Education should be an enjoyable experience and students should have
a positive attitude towards activities done in class.
A rules poster will be placed on the wall in the gym or in the classroom. This way students will
always know what the rules are and have no excuses for not following them because they
didnt know what they were.
Each student will take home a form that states all the rules. The student will read the rules with
their parents and sign the form stating they agree to follow the rules of the classroom. The
parent also needs to sign the form verifying the student read it.

Consequences

The teacher is allowed to modify the consequences depending on the severity of the action. If
the consequence is severe enough, the student may be sent to the office immediately and the
situation will be dealt with by administration, teacher, and parents.

1st Offense
Student will receive a verbal warning and notified of what they did wrong and what the
appropriate behavior is.

2nd Offense
Student will be asked to sit out of class until they are ready and willing to listen and cooperate.
The student will need to reflect on why they were placed in time-out and what the desired
behavior is.

3rd Offense
Student will be sent to the office.

Shoes/Clothing
Students are encouraged but not required to wear sweatpants or shorts to class. They are
required to wear tennis shoes during class. If a student wears boots, flip flops, or forgets their
shoes, they will be asked to sit the activity out.
If a student is continually causing major problems in class, they will be sent to administration.
Once administration is notified of the situation, the students parents may be called in for a
meeting.

Routines

Routines will be used each day and will remain consistent throughout the school year. Students
will know what they are expected to do from the beginning of class, until the end. With the use
of routines, we will be able to spend more time on activities.
Starting and Stopping
Students are expected to give their full attention whenever I am talking or giving instruction. If
we are outside on the field or track, I will use a whistle for starting and stopping. Inside I will
use a verbal command eyes on me followed by three claps. After I clap, students will also clap
three times.
Entering and Leaving
Elementary students will walk in to the gym and change shoes (if not done in classroom
already). Next, they will line up on the end line facing me ready to receive instruction.

Secondary I will assign two students (one male and one female) to be the locker room
supervisor for the week. They will be the first one in and the last one out of the locker room.
Their job is to watch any and all activity that goes on in the locker rooms and report back to me.
Students have a five minute time limit to get changed. Students will line up and I will take
attendance give the instructions for the day. We will do a dynamic warm up. Students will have
10 minutes to change back in to their normal clothes.
Equipment
I will have all necessary equipment ready before each class period. They equipment will be set
up in the gym or out on the field. The equipment will be left in the same spot if there is another
class afterward. If a class is the last group that will be using the equipment, they will help me
pick up the equipment and put it back where it came from (equipment closet, storage room).
All equipment is to be left alone until I have instructed the students to start the activity.
Students not following this rule will sit out of the activity and watch for the first five minutes.
Partners and Groups
If we are doing an activity that requires a partner or group, students will line up on the end line
and I will number them off. If a group or team is unfair in a competition activity, I will switch
students around accordingly to make the sides more evenly balanced. We will never use a
school-yard pickem process. If we are playing a game requiring teams, I will choose the teams
and make changes accordingly throughout the game.
Water Breaks
Students are encouraged to get a drink of water whenever necessary. I will provide a few water
breaks built in to the class period. Students are also encouraged to bring their own water to
class. If group water breaks become a problem, students will get drinks in small groups or
individually.
Bathroom Use
If a student needs to use the bathroom, all they need to do is ask and they will be able to use
the restroom. Students that are feeling sick can go right to the bathroom. Students will only be
allowed one bathroom break per class period. If a student is asking to use the bathroom every
class period and taking too long in the bathroom, I will have a one on one conversation with
that student.
Other Routines
Accidents/Injuries if a student is injured in class, I will have a first aid kit on hand and be able
to take care of any minor injuries. In the event of a serious injury, I will call the school nurse or
the office.

Consistency

It is crucial to set the tone for my classroom early in the school year. If students understand the
rules and protocols, my classes will run much more smoothly. I will try to help my students have
a positive attitude towards class and help them have fun throughout the school year.

Describe and Demonstrate

The first day of school I will go over the rules and expectations for my classroom. I will describe
the importance of following the rules and answer any questions the students may have. I will
post a rules and expectations poster in the gym so students are reminded daily.

Practice
My students will follow the rules and protocols every day they are in my classroom. The rules
and protocols will be clearly explained on the first day of school so students can begin
practicing right away. I will work to remind and reinforce rules and protocols on a daily basis.

Provide Feedback
I will give my students appropriate feedback when necessary. If a students is doing something
wrong, I will demonstrate or tell them what the desired behavior is. I will also use positive
feedback when a student is doing something correctly.

Set Performance Standards

Students will know what the desired behavior is based on my instruction and feedback.

Maintain Consistency
Students will be able to develop a routine as the protocols will be the same throughout the
year. Protocols will be applied each day we have class. If changes are necessary, I will properly
communicate changes with all students.
