atthewristorthroat.Doesthevictimhaveadiscerniblepulse?Ifnot,beginCPR.
Controlanymajorbleeding.
Checkfordisability.Disabilityreferstodamagetothespinalcordorneck.Check
toseeifthevictimcanmovehandsandfeet.Ifnot,theremaybeaninjurytothe
spinalcord.Deformityreferstothingssuchascompoundorobviousfractures,
dislocations,oranythingthatlooksoutofplaceorunnatural.Ifthevictimshowssignsof
disability,youshouldrefrainfrommovinghimorher.
Checkforexposure.Alwayslookforanexitwound.Checkthevictimas
thoroughlyaspossibleforotherwoundsthatyoumaybeunawareof.Payspecial
attentiontothearmpit,buttocksorotherdifficulttoseeareas.Avoidcompletely
undressingthevictimbeforeemergencyhelparrivesasthismayadvanceshock.

Elevatethelimbandapplydirectpressuretothewound.Carefullyassessthe
situationtodeterminethatthereisnosignofdisabilityoranywoundsthatwould

hearttoreducebloodflow.Applydirectpressuretostopbleedingasdescribedabove.
Applyindirectpressure.Inadditiontodirectpressure,itisalsopossibletoapply

byputtingpressureonarteriesor,astheyaresometimescalled,pressurepoints.They
willfeellikeparticularlylargeandhardveins.Applyingpressuretothemwilllimitinternal
bleeding,butyouneedtoapplypressuretotheverifythatthearteryappliestothe
