Duration:1 hour
Students will develop their understanding of the purpose of narrative writing and how authors achieve
their purpose. Students will analyse the hooks of several texts focusing on the techniques writers use
to influence readers to continue to read. If time permits students will then apply.
Outcomes (ACARA, 2015):

Identify some features and purposes of texts including events and characters (ACELT1578)

This lesson will identify students knowledge and understanding of narrative writing; in which, they
will look at a short text and identify its key features and purpose. The lesson will then focus on plot
features (conflict and resolution).

What is the purpose of a narrative? How is this purpose achieved?
What was the major theme of the story?
You are going to create a plot today based on a writing prompt. You are going to create a conflict and
resolution. Model one to the class (It was a windy night.. When I heard someone outside my

Students will be observed throughout each of the lessons on their engagement and development
towards the unit outcomes. I will also reflect by asking myself:
Did students achieve lesson outcomes?
Most students were able to achieve the learning outcomes, as students were able to identify several of
the texts features and evaluate the purpose of these features; in which they identified:
Characters help readers connect to the story;
Settings give readers a mental picture of where the story is taking place;
And, the plot contains different features such as problem the characters face and a resolution
that keeps readers entertained.
However, although most students achieved the learning outcomes I identified one student who was
unable to complete the set activity. I had spoken to this student during the activity, and explicitly
explained what he had to do. Although, the student indicated he understood my instructions (I had him
explain in his own words what he had to do) and worked consistently for 10minutes he became
stumped at the next section of the task.
Was the activity appropriately challenging?
Upon reflection, I believe the lesson was appropriately challenging for most of the students. However,
there were several students whom I believe the tasks provided were too easy for, as they completed
them very quickly and identified an understanding of textual features that was beyond their year level.
How could this lesson or future lessons be improved?
I believe future lessons could be improved by giving the student who was having difficulties a visual

reminder of what they were supposed to be doing. This way the student could refer back to the
instructions when they got stuck. Furthermore, I need to provide an extension task for students who
find the task too simple so they are appropriately challenged.
