To start the unit, we will be reading and listening to fairy tales and fractured fairy
tales. It is expected that you will write APE-format responses to comprehension
questions for the fairy tales that are explored in the unit. You will write your
responses in your reading journal. You will be handing in all of your responses,
but you will be allowed to choose which responses you would like to use for your
grades.
Fractured Fairy Tale Planning
After reviewing the structure of fairy tales, you will be required to hand in
planning to write your own fractured fairy tale. This planning will include:
- An overview of the story elements (a graphic organizer outlining the direction
your story will take)
- Character sketches
- Setting description (location, time)
Fractured Fairy Tales character sketches
In preparation for writing your own fractured fairy tale, you will be developing
character sketches of the characters in your fairy tale. A character sketch is a
description of the character what the character looks like, what the character
speaks like, the relationships the character has with other characters in the story,
and how the character acts.
Setting description
Before writing your fractured fairy tale, you will need to describe the place and
time where your story is set. This can be done by drawing a picture of the setting
or completing a setting overview graphic organizer. When you have a solid
understanding of the setting, you can add details in your writing to give more
description of the setting for your reader.
50%
After reading, responding to, and completing draft work for fractured fairy tales,
you will write and illustrate an original fractured fairy tale. It is expected that
your final copy be type written (unless otherwise discussed with Miss. Biggins).
Your fractured fairy tale will follow the narrative story plot outline and have welldeveloped characters and setting. The story will include original illustrations to
enhance your writing for the reader. The final copy of your fractured fairy tale is
due on October 29, 2015. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. THIS DUE DATE
IS FIRM!
Fractured Fairy Tale Oral Reading
10%
You will be reading your final product to students from a younger grade. This will
require you to practice reading your fractured fairy tale with expression and
clarity. You will record yourself reading your fractured fairy tale, and will be
graded on your expression, projection, and articulation.
Film Study: Fractured Fairy Tale
25%
At the end of the unit, we will be viewing a fractured fairy tale on film. You will be
asked to complete media-comprehension questions about the film. These
questions will be on a hand-out that you will complete while viewing the film. You
are expected to hand in these work pages after watching the film.
