Fractured Fairy Tales Unit Overview

In our next unit in Language Arts, we will be looking at developing convincing

characters in our writing, describing a setting, and the form that stories usually
follow. We will be using our reading comprehension skills to respond to questions
about fractured fairy tales, and understand the perspectives of different
characters in the story. The project for this unit will be a written fractured fairy
tale to share with students a younger grade (grades 2-4).
Fractured Fairy Tales reading journals

15%
To start the unit, we will be reading and listening to fairy tales and fractured fairy
tales. It is expected that you will write APE-format responses to comprehension
questions for the fairy tales that are explored in the unit. You will write your
responses in your reading journal. You will be handing in all of your responses,
but you will be allowed to choose which responses you would like to use for your
grades.
Fractured Fairy Tale Planning
After reviewing the structure of fairy tales, you will be required to hand in
planning to write your own fractured fairy tale. This planning will include:
- An overview of the story elements (a graphic organizer outlining the direction
your story will take)
- Character sketches
- Setting description (location, time)
Fractured Fairy Tales character sketches
In preparation for writing your own fractured fairy tale, you will be developing
character sketches of the characters in your fairy tale. A character sketch is a
description of the character what the character looks like, what the character
speaks like, the relationships the character has with other characters in the story,
and how the character acts.
Setting description
Before writing your fractured fairy tale, you will need to describe the place and
time where your story is set. This can be done by drawing a picture of the setting
or completing a setting overview graphic organizer. When you have a solid
understanding of the setting, you can add details in your writing to give more
description of the setting for your reader.

Fractured Fairy Tale Peer Review

Due: Friday, October 23
On Friday, October 23, we will be trading our fractured fairy tale drafts with other
students in the class for feedback. You will be required to read your classmates
fractured fairy tale, and give them suggestions for their story. They will also be
checking to make sure that you have proper grammar and spelling in your work.
You will use this feedback to complete your final copy of your fractured fairy tale.
You will hand in your peer feedback with your final edition of your fractured fairy
tale.
