6th Grade Unit 6: Geometry

Prerequisite Skills:
- Plotting points on a coordinate plane
- multiplication and division of whole numbers
- multiplication and division of fractions (unit 3)
- multiplication and division of decimals (unit 4)
- inverse operations (unit 5)
UNIT OVERVIEW: Students will continue to work with the coordinate plane in this unit. Students will
review determining the area and perimeter of a rectangle. Students will find the area or a missing
dimension from the given area of regular polygons. In this unit, students will also work with 3dimenisonal figures. Students will be asked to create a net to represent regular 3-D figures, and use
the net to determine the surface area. Students will also find the volume of a right rectangular prism.
Students will be working with whole numbers, fractions and decimals throughout this unit.

Learning Target 1: I can determine the perimeter of a two dimensional

polygon.
Example
A) Correctly use addition and multiplication
to determine the perimeter of a regular
polygon.

Learning Target 2: I can determine the area of a two dimensional regular

polygon (triangle, rectangle, parallelogram).
6.G.A.1
Example
A) Identify the correct formula for
determining the area.
B) Accurately use substitution to determine
the area OR a missing dimension from a
given area.

Learning Target 3: I can decompose an irregular polygon into rectangles and

triangles to determine the total area.
6.G.A.1
Example
A) Identify the regular shapes that the
composite or irregular figure is composed
of.

B) Use subtraction to determine any

missing dimensions

There is a
rectangle &
a triangle

6th Grade Unit 6: Geometry

C) Use the correct formulas to find the
area of each piece, and then add the
areas to find the total area of the
composite figure.

Rectangle: A = lw, A = 110 x 140 = 15,400

Triangle: A = 1/2bh, A = (1/2)(70)(90) = 3,150
15,400 + 3,150 = 18,500
A = 18,550 sq. units

Learning Target 4: I can graph coordinate pairs to create a polygon and
determine the perimeter and area of the shape.
6.G.A.3
Example
1

A) Correctly plot coordinate pairs (x,y) on a A = /2bh

coordinate plane.
A =(1/2)(8)(4)
B) Utilize the information from the shape
A = 32
created on the plane to determine the area
and/or perimeter.

Learning Target 5: I can solve real world problems involving perimeter and
area.
6.G.A.3
Example
Building a fence around a yard
Re-flooring a room
Covering a section of a room with a carpet

Learning Target 6: I can determine the volume of a rectangular prism with

whole number or fractional dimensions.
6.G.A.2
Example
A) Correctly use the volume formula to
determine the total volume or a missing
dimension.

Learning Target 7: I can represent a 3 dimensional figure using a net.

6.G.A.4
Example
A) Represent a 3D figure using a net
composed of 2D regular polygons

Learning Target 8: I can determine the total surface area of a 3 dimensional

figure from a net.
6.G.A.4
Example

6th Grade Unit 6: Geometry

A) Use the net to determine the area of
each face of the figure, and the total up the
areas.
