Learning

Childrens Prior Learning

Students have learnt about comparing and ordering duration of event, using everyday language of time. Students have learnt about days of the week and
connecting them to familiar events and actions.
Teaching / Learning Skill Development (e.g. I want to improve my questioning skills and intend to ......... These should arise from previous mentor
comments and self reflection and should be assessed below)
I want to improve my questioning skills and I intend to make sure that I dont lose track of a particular part of the lesson where it could make a negative impact
for the end of the lesson.
Teaching and Learning Preparation
I will bring: Strings, paper, 1m ruler and 30cm ruler, tape measures, Blu- Tack,
Children need: Scissors, colouring pencils, pencils, tape measures.
I have prepared: I will give the students a chance to understand what they have to do by instructing the process beforehand.
Session Structure
Lesson Phase
Orientation
/Introduction

I will discuss measurement with the students.

Asking questions and explaining to them why we
need to measure things. We will be using informal
methods, so the students gather an understanding

Classroom Management and

Organisation
Students will be sitting on the floor at
this stage. All of the materials will be set
up on each table.

Assessment, Reporting &

Evaluation Strategies
I will take note of students who
understand what they are supposed
to be doing and students who need a
little extra help. I will run through

of comparing, ordering and matching objects to the

piece of string they each get. Students will then go
outside and find objects within the garden to
measure. I will be asking is your string longer than,
shorter than or the same length? How can you tell?
(20 mins)

some more examples to ensure they

understand the task by the end of the
lesson.

How would a builder measure something?

Activity

With a partner students will measure their height

using a piece of tape roll butchers paper. Students
need to measure each other by laying on the
ground. They then have to colour in their stem for a
flower or trunk for a tree. I will give the students
some tape and we will be taping their Tree/Flower
heights to the wall so they can see what their height
is. Students will have a need to be using the
language long, longer, short, shorter, shortest, wide,
widest, about, almost, not quite, same, measure.
(20mins)

Materials are set up at each table,

students work in pairs to measure each
other with their strip of paper.

Students who may be struggling to

measure each other I will work with.
Students who are doing well will be
encouraged to keep working in their
height tree/flower.

Conclusion /Closure

I will get each student to come up and stand next to

their flower or tree. Here we will be able to see who
accurately they measured each other. I will ask the
students to look at their tree and then ask do you
think Liam is the same height as his tree.

Students will be in a semi-circle around

who- ever is being measured at the
time.

Students will be able to use long,

longer, short, shorter, shortest, wide,
widest, about, almost, not quite,
same, measure. To describe what
they are measuring. Checked when
they brought up their tree or flower
that its length matched their actual
height.

(5 mins)
Extension Activities

Extended the ones who got it easy by questioning or

getting them to help someone else.

Classroom management.
Clarifying.
Make a template beforehand.
Short and sharp otherwise students go off task.
Get all students to share with the person next to them what they found, so that no one feels left out.
Dont accommodate for every student. I.e. coloured heads.
Make instructions super clear.

Mentor Comments
Lesson one Length (Lesson repeated with different class)- Shanai did a great job of gaining students prior knowledge. Children could all follow
Shanais instructions and all had the opportunity to share their knowledge of length. On completion of the lesson, students had a clearer
understanding of measuring length informally.
Possible improvementsLesson two- Shanai included improvements in her lesson plan to ensure success criteria was clear for the children as well as clear modelling of
whats expected. Shanai may need to ensure that her instructions are clear and repeated, especially for a prep.
