The French culture in Canada:

-French explorers came to what would be Canada in search of

resources to make France rich. Some of these resources included land
and furs. The more land a country controlled, the richer they were. It
was hard crossing the ocean in a boat, but many people began to
come from France so that they could own their own land.
One of the major contributions that the French have made to Canadian
development are the early settlements where French explorers lived.
One of the first settlements that was established by non-natives in
Canada was called Quebec. Quebec was first settled in 1541 by
Jacques Cartier. They originally called Canada New France.
The French culture has made some very important contributions to
Canada. We are a bilingual country, which means we speak English and
French. We also enjoy French foods. The French explorers and settlers
that came to Canada also had to cooperate with the natives in Canada
very closely. Sometimes the a native person and a French person would
fall in love. This gave rise to a new culture in Canada called Metis.
Metis people have native and French heritage.
Hutterite Culture in Canada:
The group of people called Hutterites immigrated to Canada in order to
escape having to fight in wars. They are called pacifists, because it is
part of their religious beliefs not to fight.
Jakob Hutter was the leader of the first Hutterite group in 1528 in what
is now known as the Czech Republic. Followers of Jakob Hutter are
called Hutterites. They live a traditional and communal way of life. This
means that they do not use much technology, and they dress in
traditional clothing. The women wear long skirts and kerchiefs and the
men wear dark pants and jackets with suspenders. They make all their
own clothes.
Hutterite people live a communal way of life, which means they all live
and work together. The group cares for everyone from the time they
are born until the time they die. Everything is shared on the Hutterite
colony, including food and responsibilities.
The Hutterites came to Canada because of the religious freedoms we
enjoy here. They moved to Canada because they could refuse to take
part in wars that other countries were involved in. They have
contributed to Canadian culture by bringing their religion, languages
and ways of life to Canada.

Chinese Culture in Canada

Chinese settlers first started to come to Canada during the 1858 gold
rush in British Columbia, and lived along the Fraser River. Other
Chinese people came to Canada hoping to make more money than
they could in China. They were given very dangerous jobs, working on
the railway, in saw mills, and coal mines. These jobs were so
dangerous that many Chinese immigrants lost their lives at work.
The Chinese people have shared their culture in Canada in many
different ways. Many urban centres in Canada have a Chinatown,
where lots of Chinese businesses are located. Almost every town and
city in Canada has at least one Chinese food restaurant.
Some other interesting things from the Chinese culture that are shared
in Canada today are the use of fine porcelain. Another word for
porcelain is china because the art of ceramics was invented in China
more than 6000 years ago. Many people also practice martial arts that
originated in China.
Chinese culture is an important part of Canadian identity. Canada
might not be the unified nation it is today if the railway workers from
China had not risked their lives to connect the provinces together with
a railway.
Ukrainian Culture in Canada
Ukrainian people first started immigrating to Canada in 1891. They
were looking for a better life, and in order to have a better like, they
needed more land to make a living. When the first Ukrainians came to
Canada, they couldnt believe how much land there was. The land was
overpopulated in the Ukraine. They sent letters home telling their
family members about how big Canada is, and this encouraged other
Ukrainians to immigrate to Canada.
When Canada was a new country, the prime minister Wilfred Laurier
needed people to live in the prairies, which worked out well for the new
settlers from the Ukraine. Canada needed more farmers, and the
Ukrainian settlers needed land. The Ukrainian immigrants became
known as very hard working.
The relationship between Canadians and Ukrainian settlers was not
always great though. In 1914 when World War I began, the Canadian
government decided to place enemy aliens in internment camps.
In Europe, Ukraine was allied with Germany, and the Canadian
government was afraid that the Ukrainians that came to live in Canada
would be secret supporters of Canadas enemy in the war, Germany.

During this time the Canadian government would not allow Ukrainians
to immigrate to Canada.
The Ukrainian culture has contributed to Canada in a variety of ways,
for example, many Ukrainian celebrations are linked to religious
holidays like Easter and Christmas. Ukrainians introduced the idea of
painting eggs for Easter to Canada! Canadians of all different cultural
backgrounds enjoy Ukrainian foods like perogies. People of Ukrainian
background are another culture that make Canada the great
Multicultural nation it is!
The British (English) Europeans and Canada
During the Age of Exploration, countries from Europe wanted to expand
their influence and explore the earth for land a resources. England and
France were two major powers during the Age of Exploration.
John Cabot, was born in Italy, but eventually immigrated to England. In
1497 John Cabot sailed across the Atlantic ocean and to Canada. What
Cabot had really wanted was a route to Asia, because Asian spices
were becoming really popular in foods, so he really discovered
Canada by accident.
Fishing was the first European industry in what is now called Canada.
Fishing was important to Europeans. This is somewhat because of the
religious rules that they werent allowed to eat meat on Fridays. For
many years the English fished off the coast of what is now Canada, and
returned to England during the winter. Later on, the fur trade also
became a very important industry.
Once the English decided to participate in the fur trade, they formed a
company that is still known in Canada today. It is called the Hudsons
Bay Company. The
