Homework #3
Due: Wednesday, October 14th, In-Class
1) For this problem, use the floor plan from homework #2.
a. Develop a 2-D model (in RISA or SAP) to determine the design moments for the
slab along column line A-B. Your model should consist of the three columns in
column line A-B linked by a slab-beam at mid-height. Use the Hueste-Wight
recommendations to determine values. Apply dead and live loads and use
pattern loads (if required by ACI) to determine the total negative and positive
design moments in bay A-B.
b. Use the tables given by the direct design method to distribute the design moments
to the column and middle strips.
c. Compare your findings to the following design moments determined through use
of the direct design method (these neglect contributions from adjacent spans) and
provide a brief discussion of the similarity or difference between the findings
obtained using the two methods.

2) For the slab panel shown below, use the yield-line method to determine the area load, ,
required to form a plastic mechanism. The slab has isotropic reinforcement such that =
9 k ft/ft and + = 5 k ft/ft. Assume the edge shown at the bottom of the figure (crosshatched) is fully fixed and that the two sides are simply supported (free to rotate). The topmost edge is unsupported.
