Assessmentscanbeaneffectivetoolinunderstandingstudentsindividualstrengthsand
areasofgrowthinallacademicareas.Schoolsmustbeaccountableandadheretoboth
nationalandstatestandardstoreceivegovernmentfunds.Asaresult,numerousassessments
arerequiredtomonitorstudentprogressandarestrongindicatorsoffutureacademicsuccess.
InmovingtowardtheimplementationofanRTIsystem,mostschoolsshouldconductanaudit
oftheexistingassessmentsbeingusedateachgradelevel(StahlandMckenna,2013,p34).
Byperformingaschoolassessmentauditteachesandstaffareawareofwhatassessmentsare
currentlybeingusedandprovideanopportunitytocreateacohesivesystemofassessments
thataccuratelyconstructaacademicstudentprofileofeachchild.

Thegoaloftheseprofessionallearningdevelopmentsessionsistoemphasizethe
benefitsofuniversalscreening.GiventheRTIpreventionmodel,screeningisthefirststepin
identifyingstudentswhomaybeatriskforlearningdifficulties.Byfocusingontargetskills
teacherscanquicklyidentifystudentswhoareunderperformingcomparedtotheirpeers.During
thistimeteacherscancollaborateanddiscusswhatassessmentwouldbemostbeneficialto
usetoidentifyareasofneedinspecificcontentareas.

Usingformalandinformalassessmentstomonitorstudentprogressisbeneficial
becauseitenablesteachersbemoreintentionalinplanningeffectivelessonsandpromotes
studentengagementbyutilizingstudentsstrengthsandlearningstylestomakelearningmore
meaningful.Whenteachersusemultipleformsofstudentassessmentsitprovidesabetter
understandingofskillsandconceptslearnedaswellasidentifymisconceptionsand
discrepanciesinstudentlearning.Multipleformsofassessmentsalsocanincreasestudent
motivationwhenstudentsareabletodemonstrateunderstandingsinmultipleformsand
providesasenseofownership.Duringtheseprofessionallearningmeetingsschool
professionalswillhaveanopportunitytoreviewawiderrangeofassessmentstodemonstrate
studentsunderstandingsaswellashowthoseassessmentscanbeusedtodrivefuture
instruction.
