PEPSI Screening for
Rosela Villalobos

BIO: Rosela Villalobos is a six and a half year old Hispanic kindergarten student at Keller
Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is bilingual in Spanish as her first language and
English as her second, she can speak both fluently. Rosela alternates between living with her
mother, who only speaks Spanish, and living with her father, who speaks limited English, both of
which live in low income neighborhoods. Rosela seems to be more attached to her mother, when
she shows up to school on days she stays with her father she cries for her mom. At her mothers
home she lives with her 23 year old sister and two year old niece. Rosela also lives with her
fifteen year old brother and an eleven year old sister.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Rosela is about 3 feet 6 inches (42inches) and is about 47 pounds. According to a chart
found on babycenter.com she is perfectly within the height and weight ranges for a 6 year old
girl (Babycenter.com, 2015). She is of medium build, she still has some baby fat so she is not
very slender but she is not overly big either. While watching Rosela on the playground Ive seen
that she is very good at balancing and has very good hand eye coordination. She has excellent
small muscle control like cutting with scissors (Ellsworth, 1999). She also has good gross muscle
control, like running and waving her arms controllably. Rosela seems to be in very good health,
according to her teacher she has only missed three or four days max this school years, she also is
in complete control her bathroom needs as there have been no wetting accidents this year (L.
STOCKER, PERSONAL COMMUNICATION, APRIL 20, 2015). Id say compared to other six
year-olds she is right on if not just above where she should be.

EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Viewing Rosela I have learned that she is very caring and loving. She has shown no signs
of being defiant or mean towards either her classmates or teacher. On the few bad days she has a
hard time listening to directions and has to be brought back to reality, but those days are far and
few between (Ellsworth, 1999). Rosela is very competitive she wants to the best reader in the
class and she was determined to achieve that goal. Her teacher refers to her as The Little
Teacher, Rosela is wiling to help any student at anytime with what they need. Mrs. Stocker
says, If I have a new student that doesnt know all of their letters and sounds or just needs to
learn a few more sight word, Rosela is the student I go to help them peer-to-peer. She will sit
there with them until they get it. I believe that she is in Eriksons stage of Industry versus
Inferiority, when she talks or writes she mostly talks about her friends Calia and Jaqueline and
very few times have I heard her talking about her parents (Slavin, 2015). I believe Rosela is right
where she needs to be emotionally compared to other 6 year-olds.

PHILOSOPHICAL DEVELOPMENT
Rosela seems to have a slightly higher philosophical development than students of the
same age. She has a very good sense of right and wrong and believes in obedience to rules as a
requirement (Ellsworth, 1999). She always has her arms crossed and mouth shut when walking
in the halls, every time without fail she has as she calls it a hug and bubble. She has a sense that
people in the world live their lives just like she does, she doesnt understand that others are going
through different things than she is better or worse (iTeacher Suite, 2013). Rosela is not very
impulsive, she thinks things through and realizes the consequences.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Rosela is a people pleaser, she likes to do her best to please her parents and her teacher,
but she will ask for help willingly when needed and will take what advice she has been given
seriously (Ellsworth, 1999). She works well independently and can stay on task but given the
chance she will find a friend to do work with (L. STOCKER, PERSONAL COMMUNICATION,
APRIL 20, 2015). She can easily tell if someone is sad or upset and will help however she can,
including going to the person that had done the upsetting and put them in their place. Also, she
can be bossy, Ive noticed while she was playing a game with other kids that she will be the one
in charge and even change the rules of the game to best fit her need. Yet the other students go
along with her because she has an I know best personality (iTeacher Suite, 2013). I believe she
is more towards a 7 year-old social development compared to other 6 year-olds.

PEPSI Screening

INTELECTUAL DEVELOPMENT
Rosela is very close to being more of a 7 year-old in intellectual development than a 6
year-old but still has some qualities of the younger age. She is very focused on reading, she
actually learned this year how to read and will spend as much time as possible reading. She
doesnt focus so much on her handwriting but it is still very good because of her high small
muscle control. She constantly wants to show how smart she is by working hard and finishing all
work in and out of school given to her. (L. Stocker, Personal Communication, April 20, 2015).
She understands that inanimate objects are not alive, like her dolls do not move but she doesnt
understand more natural occurrences like clouds make the decision to rain. (iTeacher Suite,
2013) Also, her ability to understand something is very good, but she is not every good at
explaining what she understands (Ellsworth, 1999).

RECOMENDATIIONS

Physical: Continue to let Rosela grow and work on defining her small muscle skill and

her gross motor skills.

Emotional: Try keeping her more on talk on her bad days by giving something that

interest her or that she would enjoy.

Philosophical: Teach her about other cultures and how people from all over live

differently to show that not everyone lives just like her.

Social: Encourage her to give other students a chance to make rules and be in charge of

playtime, this way she can help other kids to be leaders too.
Intellectual: Based on her caring nature and her willing ness to help having her help other
children that are struggling is a good way to help the other student while also enforcing
what Rosela already knows.
