Smith
Citation: Smith, Ronald A. Pay for Play: A History of Big-time College
Athletic Reform. Urbana, Chicago: U of Illinois, 2011. Print.
1. The audience is student athletes, former athletes, and anyone who
is taking a pro paying side to the argument. The information is for
paying college athletes and most collegiate athletes both former
and present are for the paying of athletes. Yes, because it favors my
approach more but it gives an anti-approach to my argument.
2. This applies by having a well-documented approach to the reason
why athletes should be paid and why they should not. My project is
on why they should be paid. I need both sides of the argument to
make this a good paper.
3. I do not detect any biases or anything of that matter in this book.
For example the entire book has a pro argument example followed
by anti- argument example.
4. The text is based on true events and historical happening that have
been documented by the University of Illinois. This book is a very
good source.
5. This book was published in 2011, this is in the prime of the debating
of pay for play. However, it is too old to involve the trails of the CFB
players union which is a staple in this argument.
6. Yes, he is a sport historian and professor emeritus at Penn State.
7. I think they play a little role in this, the publisher is not based on
this research but helps in authenticity.
8. The review on this book have been good that I have seen. I think
this book has changed a lot of opinions on this subject because of
its research.
9. I think that this may have paved the way for further research on this
matter.
10. 4, This is an excellent source as I stated earlier, but it lacks what
has happened in most recent events and that is why it is a four not
a five.
2. Should College Athletes Be Paid?
Gilleran, Mike, Ron Katz, and Issac Vaughn. "Should College Athletes Be
Paid?" Santa Clara Law. Santa Clara University, 15 July 2013.
Web. 23 Sept. 2015. <http://law.scu.edu/sports-law/shouldcollege-athletes-be-paid/>.
1. The audience for this article is any person that is not for and for the
paying of college athletes. This information provides nine reason as
to why student athletes should be paid. This source is exactly what I

need in my paper. This is a good resource to support my opinion on

this matter.
2. This applies to my project because I am trying to persuade people
as to why college athletes should be paid and this supports my
opinion in detail.
3. I do not find any biases or faulty reasoning with this source. It
provides information as to why athletes should be paid and supports
its argument fairly.
4. This is a scholarly article that was written by three authors, and is
only two years old. The citations are of very reliable sources as well.
5. This source is only two years old which is great because it includes
the most modern events that have happened in the last couple of
years.
6. These authors are previous sports writers so they have experience
writing these types of articles and are familiar with how the world of
sports works.
7. They validate this research. By it being published by a university,
this becomes more credible.
8. From other research this article has been used in other articles as a
base of evidence and has been reviewed on a sporting news
network.
9. I think this source will be a base for fighting the actual battle of this
matter and will spark other articles opposing it.
10. 5, this article gives great information needed for my essay and is
a very reliable source.
3. Paychecks for College Athletes
Pazzanese, Christina. "Paychecks for College Athletes?" Harvard
Gazette. Harvard University, 27 Mar. 2014. Web. 23 Sept. 2015.
1. Sport enthusiasts and college athletes as a whole. At this particular
time there was a big debate over whether or not student athletes
were employees of the universities, so this was a big interview that
revealed a lot of answers. This is a good source for me because it
covers a part of the subject that was a major happening.
2. This applies to my project because it states good information about
the unionization of athletes and why is should happen and why it
didnt happen.
3. This is a straight forward interview that is solely based on the
actions that were ruled in court of the CFB players union. So there
are no biases or anything of that such.
4. This is an interview of a Harvard sports law professor and are his
opinions on the matter so this is very original and this has been

used as a citation and for present day cases of paying for college
athletics.
5. This source is on a year old so it very up to date with everything
that has happened.
6. The person who is being interviewed is a sports law professor and
the author is a sports writer so they both have experience when it
comes to this kind of information.
7. The play a little role in this but help bring out needed information to
the public.
8. This source has brought needed information to the sports world and
inspired many articles about the interview that analyze it.
9. I think this source will better help others understand the true story
of the unionization of CFB players and why it did not happen.
10. 4, I like this source because it has very up to date information
and is a different way of gathering it by means of an interview.
4. Paying College Athletes is a Terrible Idea
Emmert, Mark. "Paying College Athletes Is a Terrible Idea." Wall Street
Journal-Eastern Edition 259.8 (2012): A11. Academic Search
Premier [EBSCO]. Web. 23 Sept. 23.
1. The audience is college athletes and anyone who is concerned or
involved in the fight to pay college athletes for playing. This
information provides a logical well thought out reasoning to why
athletes should not be paid in college. This gives me a balance of
pro and con for my project on this matter.
2. This applies to my project because it is arguing in the defense of not
paying college athletes.
3. This author of this article does not have any biases he agrees with
the problems but not the solutions. This makes his argument very
logical and not biased.
4. This material is very reliable because it is coming straight from the
president of the NCAA and he is the person who oversaw the trial
and all other internal affairs dealing with this subject.
5. Yes this source is up to date it is three years old which helps with
authenticity of information.
6. The author is the NCAA president and is very experienced when
dealing with this matter.
7. The publisher does not play a role in this article.
8. This article has been subject for debate, criticism, and praise over
this problem and will continue to be used with the same way.
9. I think that this source can be used as evidence as to what the
NCAA used to think if they ever change their mind.
10. 5, this is a very reliable source to use and have great information
that I can use in my essay.
5. Pay or Dont Play

Barbash, Louia. "Pay or Don't Play." Washington Monthly 45.9/10

(2013): 13-15. Academic Search Premier [EBSCO]. Web. 23 Sept.
2015.
1. The audience for this article is for college basketball fans primarily.
This article is about giving college basketball player compensation
so they will not forgo their last three seasons of eligibility and leave
after their freshman year. This helps me because this article further
covers the debate over the growing problem of giving compensation
to college athletes.
2. This source talks about some major reasons why we should pay
athletes to better their lives as well as the sports.
3. There are no biases in this article it use citations well and good

used as a source for many other articles.

especially in basketball out when they need extra help for everyday
expenses.
10. 5, I like this source very much because it uses real life examples of
how athletes struggle to make way in college because of a lack of
funds.
