Feedback TEHRAN, Jan. 4 (MNA) -- Iran-Iraq relations can be strengthened if the two countries boost ties
between their private sector companies, Iraqi Commerce Minister Falah al-Sudani said here on
Sunday.
Iran-Iraq trade amounted to $3 billion in 2008, although the two countries have the
potential to greatly expand their economic interactions, al-Sudani stated in a meeting with
high–ranking Iranian economic officials.

Iraqi officials and the Iraqi people are determined to expand economic relations with Iran,
IRNA quoted al-Sudani as saying.

In the meeting with al-Sudani and the Iraqi trade delegation, Iran-Iraq Economic
Development Headquarters Secretary General Hassan Danaifar predicted that the volume of
bilateral trade will reach $4.2 billion by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March
20, 2009).

He said that exports of goods, excluding fossil fuels, would account for $2.5 billion of the
projection, while tourism and exports of technical and engineering services and energy
products would account for the rest.

Iran and Iraq had previously agreed to establish free trade zones in the border regions of Al
Kut, Al Emara, and Suleimanieh, and the two sides have floated the idea of establishing
trade centers in Karbala and Irbil, he added.

Some 23 percent of Iran’s non-oil products are exported to Iraq, he noted.

He also asked the Iraqi officials to facilitate the efforts of Iranian firms and investors to
implement technical and engineering projects in Iraq.
