    ThefunctionsofaprofessionalQuantitySurveyor(PrQS)are:
    Theprofessionalquantitysurveyorisbroadlyconcernedwithprocurementstrategies,measuringandcosting
    constructionprojects.Themethodsapplied,however,coverarangeofactivitieswhichmayincludecost
    planning,valueengineering,valuemanagement,feasibilitystudies,costbenefitanalysis,lifecyclecosting,risk
    analysis,tendering,valuation,changecontrol,disputeresolution,claimsmanagement,projectmanagement,
    costestimationandvalueformoneyassessments.
    ThePrQS'straditionalindependentroleontheteamcomprisedoftheclient,architect,engineersandproject
    managerhasgivenhim/herareputationandappreciationforfairness.This,combinedwithhis/herexpertisein
    draftingandinterpretingcontractdocuments,enablesthequantitysurveyortosettleissues,valuetheworks
    fairlyandregularly,projectfinalcosts,avoiddisputesandenhancetheeffectiveprogressofaproject.
    PrQSsadviseonthecontrolofconstructioncostsbyaccuratemeasurementoftheworkrequiredonaregular
    basis,theapplicationofexpertknowledgeofcostsandpricesofwork,labour,materialsandplantrequired,
    togetherwithanunderstandingoftheimplicationsofdesigndecisionsatanearlystagetoensurethatgood
    valueisobtainedforthemoneytobeexpended.
    Thetechniqueofmeasuringquantitiesfromdrawings,sketchesandspecificationspreparedbyDesigners,
    principalArchitectsandEngineers,inordertopreparetender/contractdocuments,isknownintheindustryas
    takingoff.Thequantitiesofworktakenofftypicallyareusedtopreparebillsofquantities(BoQ),whichusually
    arepreparedinaccordancewithapublishedStandardSystemofMeasurement(SSM)asagreedtobytheQS
    professionandrepresentativesoftheconstructionindustry.Thisactivityisusuallycompletedbeforethe
    commencementofworkonsiteonatraditional(BoQ)project.Thecontractorwillthenpricethisdocumentin
    competitivetenderandwillbepaidonamonthlybasisaccordingtoameasureundertakenonsiteandapplied
    toeachspecificworkitem.
