IN-HOUSE SEMINAR

Reynaldo S. Angara, MBA Candidate

The seminar entitled Engineering, Procurement and Construction Integrated

Solutions Provider was conducted last September 5, 2015. Our invited speaker was
Engr. Eldridge Cedric Dijos Andrade from Flour Daniel. The speaker was not only very
knowledgeable about the topic but he was also able to provide insights, ideas and lessons
that we can use in our career. Through the seminar we were able to know how massive
projects are planned executed and completed. We got to know how the speakers
company deals with clients and how they value professionalism and honesty. Despite the
speakers achievements, I can feel his humility and sincerity in imparting his knowledge

and experiences to us. He was able to inspire a lot of us with his success story. The
speaker and the activity itself so inspired also our professor, Dr. Moreno, that he too,
shared with us his success story to further inspire us. The seminar was indeed very
successful and I have to commend my classmates who worked as one in order to have
this seminar very memorable and productive.

Zarvie-An Arcega, MBA Candidate

The speaker was from as Fluor Daniel Inc. Philippines.

As the speaker said, and as their website claims, Fluor is one of the worlds
largest publicly traded engineering, procurement, construction (EPC), maintenance, and
project management companies. Fluor works with governments and Clients in diverse
industries around the world to design, construct, and maintain complex and challenging
capital projects.
Fluor has been executing projects in the Philippines for more than 25 years. Along
with the companys project execution capabilities Fluor also supports the local
community.

The speaker, Engr. Eldridge Cedric Andrade, has been in the industry for many
years (dont know the exact years).
Fluor Philippines, along with his previous experiences, he had learned a lot that
he shared with us. He mainly gave emphasis on process engineering, a brief background
of the company. Process engineering included specification optimization, the realization,
and adjustments of the process applied to the manufacturing of the products. He told us
about the process involved starting from the clients request to the process design,
process flow and block flow diagrams, utility flow diagrams, heat and material balances,
material selection, process control, relief system design, process simulations, and
operating manuals.
For the organizers of the seminar, I could see that they were doing well. They
facilitated the seminar considerably well, ended the seminar on time, and had an organic
open forum addressing the questions from the students. The speaker, however, couldve
gone with a more interactive talk, allowing the audience to participate more and asking if
theyre hiring. (Haha!)
But overall, I could say we learned a lot from the seminar and a big advantage
because Im also connected in Engineering Company even I am not an engineer.

Janice T. Buenavista, MBA Candidate

The seminar on Engineering, Procurement and Construction Integrated SolutionsPhases of a Project conducted by Engineer Eldridge Cedric Andrade provided us a
solid application of the overall concepts and methodologies which we have learned in this
subject. Just like in any other service type of business, several phases of a project must
be undergone before a project can be initiated, from the start up until its final completion
so that the project will be smoothly executed, thus realizing every business goal on
providing service excellence, customer satisfaction, maximization of throughput and
realization of ones end goal to earn a profit.

Flour Daniel specializes in Engineering, Procurement and Construction, as well as

in project management. In across six continents, they collaborate with the government,
multinational companies to design, build and maintain worlds most challenging and
capital projects.

With its high level of expertise, equipped with highly competent

personnel and with a culture of excellence, it commits itself in delivering reliable projects
as well as solutions, with a world class output and credibility. No wonder that the
company was hailed by Fortune 500 as Rank#1 in EPC Industry in America.
The speaker has tackled the Phases of a Project which involves six steps. First
one, is the Project Initiation. He stressed out the key elements of each project in order to
pinpoint the interfaces required and also the potential risks associated with each phase.
With this, we may be able to reduce rework, cost growth and schedule delay in
subsequent phases. In addition, proper start up is the most critical aspect as it ensures the
future success of a project. At this particular stage, it involves primary development of
strategies and plans which must be reviewed and expanded in order to push through to
the next level. This includes the collaboration of the Operations Manager, Process
Engineers, Purchasing Departments, Operators and the like, who does each specific task.
Some of which includes the scope, budget, manpower forecast, review of clients design,
etc. As early as this stage, analysis must be done to determine the feasibility of the
project. The second phase, is the Preliminary Engineering or Construction Planning, in
which after narrowing the scope issues and financial analysis, functional requirements is
being carried out. It involves the layout, process diagrams, developing the scale models.
Meanwhile the third step is the Detailed Engineering and Site Initiation, which he
explained as the heart and soul of the project. Detailed drawing is made and analyzed so

that it will comply with the codes and standard of safety performance. The design is then
documented in a set of drawings and specifications. Deviations are being coordinated
and rectified upon. Fourth phase, is the Construction/ Final Design in which the actual
construction begins. This entails the most cash outlay therefore supervision is most
crucial. After the construction is completed, a look test is being administered in the
Phase 5.

Then followed by project close out in Phase 6 or the completion of all

remaining matters, including financial and contractual requirements. Also the planned
termination of relationship between the contractor and the client.

Kristel Cruz, MBA Candidate

The topic is very much applicable and needed in the subject matter. In fact in
managing a production and/or operations, a manager must have a solid background about
Project Management. It was an interesting topic since I am also in the same industry of
Engineering. I am handling the project management of Eastern Communications-San
Miguel Telco Outside Plant Group. The application of the PM phases is what we
religiously followed, my work includes Engineering Design, Procurement and
Implementation and Acceptance for five years now.

The speaker was so true when he discussed the phases of project management. It
must be religiously followed to ensure success of the project being implemented. Also, in
any projects, you need to manage three factors: Cost, Budget and Time. Any deviation
in one factor will result in deviation of other. Therefore, there is a need to have a deep
understanding on how to manage and balance the three factors.
Overall, the seminar serves its purpose and that was to provide and learn
something significant about Production and Operations Management straight from a
horses mouth.

Arnold L. Dacuma, MBA Candidate

The seminar with the theme Engineering, Procurement and Construction

Integrated Solutions Provider was conducted in a formal set-up and contents of the
seminar were relevant to the subject ADVANCED PRODUCTION AND OPERATION
MANAGEMENT.
The invited speaker, Engr, Eldridge Andrade who is affiliated with Fluor
and Rizal Technological University, gave great insights of the actual scenario of the
production and were able to give advices and tips to the audience. A colleague was also

able to provided information regarding disaster prevention as additional inputs to the

audience.
My general view of the seminar is great and it has been informative to the
students and professor who attended the seminar.

Joshua V. De Vera, MBA Candidate

On September 5, 2015we conducted a seminar in one of our subjects Advanced

Production and Operation Management at Rizal Technological University, AstroBowl
Room, in Graduate School Building. The theme of this seminar is Engineering,
Procurement, and Construction Integrated Solutions Provider.
The seminar we conducted was indeed a great help to us, MBA students. To be
part of it is a big advantage to us. Through the seminar we were able to know the

important factors in production and operation that MBA students should be aware
especially

in

the

real

world

of

business.

Honestly, we were so fortunate that the speaker is very good and well
experienced. Had it not been because of them we were able to enlighten ourselves of the
profession that we choose today. It was Engr. Eldridge Cedric D. Andrade, the speaker
with his expertise tackle about the The Phases of a Project Fluor Company.
I learned a lot with the seminar, the presentation about phases of a project is
appropriate with the business student like us. The discussion and the explanation of Engr.
Eldridge Cedric D. Andrade are very well set, we truly understand and inspired, and we
learned so much about to develop a better comprehension of how projects are executed, it
is very important the basis phases of a project, especially for those beginners and students
who taking up business course to have an idea about in engineering and construction. The
seminars tackled about the phase of a project represent the logical development of the
work from initial concept to a projects conclusion. Understanding the phases of a project
and the activities that occur within each phase should help contribute to better project
execution.
Actually, A project is generally divided into the following seven phases; the Phase
zero is project initiation, Phase one Scope Definition and Conceptual Development,
Phase two Preliminary Engineering and Construction Planning, Phase three Detailed
Engineering and Site Initiation, Phase four Construction, Final Design and Engineering
Support for Construction, Phase five Checkout and Start-up Support and lastly, Phases
six Project Close- up and aside from that we also learned from the seminar about the

company profile of Fluor Daniel Inc. Company, the Fluor business units, and their
company reputation.
For the organizers and also to my classmates arranged the seminar, I could say
Thank You that they were doing well, in spite of the apparent pressures and technical
difficulties of the system. They facilitated the seminar considerably well, ended the
seminar on time, also had an open forum and intermission number of Mr. John Eric
Estrellado and aside from that we had an awarding certificate and the last part of seminar
was the pictorial, I could say we learned a lot from the seminar.

Richeneil Dela Torre, MBA Candidate

The seminar entitled Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Integrated

Solutions Provider initiated by our class was held at Rizal Technological University on
September 5, 2015.
Aside from being a part of the academic requirement on our subject on the
Masters in Business Administration, my attendance and participation to the seminar was
equally important on my part because I was also interested on the topic. I am curious

since I was a child on how massive projects such as skyscrapers, dams, waterways, mines
and others came to exist. The topic answered my curiosity. Never did I thought that the
planning also took as long as to building the actual infrastructure.
Luckily, our speaker is well versed and knowledgeable about the topic. It was
indeed a great help to us and a big advantage to be a part it. The process that they follow
in planning the project could also be used to other industry with just a few tweaks. The
speaker taught us the different phases of their project management.
On Intro Phase, weve learned on how to develop a better comprehension of how
project are executed and understand the interface and potential risks involved in a project.
On Phase 0, weve been taught that the proper start-up of a project is the most critical
aspect of ensuring the success of the project. On Phase 1, it is where everything related to
construction is planned including engineering, procurement, construction, and operations.
On Phase 2, it is where all the needs in the construction were planned out. On Phase 3,
the phase by which every plan is being laid out to right to the detail. On Phase 4, it is
where the actual construction begin. On Phase 5, it is where the project is tested and
ensured that it is working properly. On Phase 6 which is the last phase, it is the phase
where the project is formally closed out.
Overall, it is a good learning experience and I highly recommend everyone to
attend such a seminar if it is ever conducted again.

Camille Gonzales, MBA Candidate

5th of September year 2015, at Rizal Technological College, MBA Students held a
seminar entitled Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Integrated Solutions
ProviderThe seminar is part of the academic requirement on our subject on Advanced
Production Operations Management Class.
I like the way each group organized the said seminar. As a preparation each group
has a task to do. The prayer that was led by one of its member made the start of the
seminar in good atmosphere. Even the singing of our national anthem was nice. The
creativity of the group was shown with the way they arrange and decorated the rooms

were the seminar was held. It was simple but very attractive and a space and ambiance
that is enough for us to focus on to the speaker. We had foods including a hot coffee. I
commend the speaker, my professor and my classmates(including me of course) for they
did their best in leading the said seminar. We have no cause of delay because everyone is
ready to participate including in the question and answer portion with the speaker.
But if I will be asked if it was successful or not, for me it is definitely a successful
one. The speaker has a good poise and I noticed that the audience really listened well
unto what the speaker is saying. I also salute my group for having such an admirable
speaker with his experience in the said field, he was able to discuss in a good way the
experiences she had and the things we must consider in Production and Operation field. I
was amazed with how dedicated he was in his field.
The seminar that the group conducted gave us the whole picture of what to
expect. Plus we are truly inspired on how the speaker and my professor achieved all their
success in their career. TEAM= Together Everyone Achieves More.

Joel Manalo, MBA Candidate

Organize an activity or a seminar is not easy and these new batch conducted
seminar bring us the whole picture of what to expect. Plus we are truly inspired on how
the speaker and my professor achieved all their success in their career giving inspirational
talk and encouragement to us to more competitive and productive in our current field.
The resources speaker delivers the reality and the needs of the industry when he
discussed the part of project management. It must be religiously followed to ensure
success of the project being implemented. Also, in any projects, we need to manage three

factors: Manufacturing, Cost, Budget and Time. Any deviation in one factor will result in
deviation of other to understand the production or flow they said field and task.
At the strategic level, manufacturing decisions define the manufacturing
infrastructure and technology that is required. Based on high level forecasting and sales
estimates, the company management has to make strategic decisions on how products
will be manufactured. The decisions can require new manufacturing facilities to be built
or to increase production at existing facilities. However, if the overall company
objectives include moving manufacturing overseas, then the decisions may lean towards
using subcontracting and third party logistics. As environmental issues influence
corporate policy to a greater extent, this may influence strategic supply chain decisions
with regards to manufacturing one of the topics that he discussed and share to us.
Total result and observation this seminar gives big help to our subject to know
more and to understand the reality in operation.

Rowell C. Marasigan, MBA Candidate

We had our in-house seminar at the RTU Blue Room entitled Phases of a
Project with Engr. Eldridge Cedric D. Andrade of FLUOR as our guest speaker.
To develop a better comprehension of how projects are executed, it is important to
understand the basic phases of a project. The phases of a project represent the logical
development of the work from initial concept to a projects conclusion. Understanding

the phases of a project and the activities that occur within each phase should help
contribute to better project execution.
Our speaker is a very good resource person. I learned many things about the seven
project phases. Especially why some project managers are successful and some are not,
why projects fail, what must be the characteristics of project managers for them to be
effective, and how to properly close-out a project. The visuals are also good because we
are able to cope with what the speaker is discussing though its kind of hard for me to
understand some technical topics because my field is not engineering.
Now lets talk about the activities we did where we asked questions and the
speaker gladly answered all of them. Then we had our awarding of certificates and
picture taking. Time flew very fast especially when you are enjoying what you are doing.
The three hour seminar really made me feel so satisfied for what we spent time with
because the knowledge that the speaker shared to us is very fulfilling and I can really say
that I can apply those tips on how we can enhance our project management skills and be
more confident in handling projects. This seminar taught us so many things that we can
use in our every lives.
We must understand the phases of a project and the respective engineering
activities associated with each phase. It is also important that we understand the sequence
of activities within each phase and the need to identify out of sequence occurrences,
communicate them to the project team and mitigate the associated risks.

Sally Nio, MBA Candidate

The class on Advanced Production and Operation Management were attending the
seminar last September 5, 2015, Saturday Morning. Seminar was started at about exact 9
am, and attendance of the class were almost complete. The place of the seminar was
conducted at the AstroHall Room of Graduate School Building at Rizal Technological
University,MandaluyongCity. The topic of the seminar was all about Phases Of A

Project. This seminar was conducted by Engr. Eldridge Cedric D. Andrade of FLOUR
company.
The first talk was delivered by Mr. MJ Marquez and followed by Ms. Mae Chloe
Ramos, Introducing our professor Dr. Edgar Moreno, Sr. and our guest, Engr. Eldridge
Cedric D. Andrade. The introduction was all about How projects are executed,
discussed also the importance of understanding the basic phases of a project and
represented the logical development of the work from initial concept to a project
conclusion.Understanding also the phases of a project and the activities that occur within
each phase should help contribute to better project execution. Discussed also the seven
phases of a project.
While the seminar was on going, Mr.Neil was busy then taking photos to all of us
inside the room, while others were taking videos.I noticed that all were silent that time
listening to the guest speaker because the topic was really interesting.
After the discussion of the topic was finished, questions were asked by the class
and of course answered by our guest speaker. Then awarding of certificate of attendance
was conducted by Dr. Edgar Moreno, Sr. and our guest, Mr. Eldridge Cedric D. Andrade.
We were called one by one on the stage for awarding the certificate and taking
photos. I saw with my two eyes, the satisfaction on the face of our professor and because
of over flown happiness, he expressed his gratitude to our guest and also to us because
the seminar was really successful. The whole seminar was added to our knowledge on
how a construction project was started from the time it was deal with the client, and
giving the offer until the deal was successfully accepted by both parties.

The seminar on Engineering, Procurement and Construction Integrated SolutionsPhases of a Project conducted by Engineer Eldridge Cedric Andrade provided us a
solid application of the overall concepts and methodologies which we have learned in this
subject.
Fluor Corporation is one of the world's leading publicly traded engineering,
procurement, construction, maintenance, and project management companies. Fluor
Daniel Inc. Philippines (Fluor Philippines) has been in operation since 1987. The

offices first project was engineering for a Client in China. Fluor Philippines now offers
full-service EPC services to Clients locally and around the world.
The speaker topic is all about the phases in project development Dividing a
project into phases makes it possible to lead it in the best possible direction. Through this
organization into phases, the total work load of a project is divided into smaller
components, thus making it easier to monitor. The following paragraphs describe a
phasing model that has been useful in practice. It includes six phases: Initiation phase,
Definition phase, Design phase, Development phase, Implementation phase and Followup phase.

Marianne C. Estrada, MBA Candidate

The MBA 241 class organized a seminar last September 5, 2015. It was held at
Blue Room, RND Building. The seminar entitled Engineering, Procurement and
Construction: Integrated Solutions Provider and the invited speaker was Engr.
Eldridge

Cedric

Dijos

Andrade

from

Flour

Daniel,

Philippines.

It was a delightful experience being part of this seminar. The speaker was
conversant, energetic and an expert on his field. He explained how their companies do

business, from getting a target customer up to the project development.

A new

knowledge was acquired from this seminar. It was very different from the field we
belong but this one although far from what we used to work with we manage to
understand because of the inspiring words of the speaker. He shares his experiences from
different projects he had. As the talked deepen, it becomes inspirational to the point that
even Dr. Edgar M. Moreno, Sr. shares his own experiences that inspire us more.
Lastly, the effort of the class that binds with coordination was resulted to an
unexpected, inspiring and great experience.
