Dream
Objective/Purpose: TEKS
Reading
TEKS (3)(B) ask relevant questions, seek clarification, and locate facts and details about stories
and other texts and support answers with evidence from text
Students should able be able to answer relevant questions about creatures and islands to seek clarification
and locate facts with supporting evidence from text.
TEKS (9)(B) Describe main characters in works of fiction, including their traits, motivations, and feelings.
motivations, and different feelings.
Social Studies
TEKS (6)(A) identify major landforms and bodies of water, including each of the continents and
each of the oceans, on maps and globes
At the end of the lesson students should be able to identify the major landforms and bodies of water on the
map.
TEKS (5)(A) interpret information on maps and globes using basic map elements such as title,
orientation and legend/map keys
At the end of the lesson students should be able to interpret information on the maps such as orientation
(North, South, East, and West), identify map keys/legend.
Technology
TEKS (3)(B) Use research skills to build a knowledge base regarding a topic, task, or assignment
At the end of the lesson students should use research skills on computers to build more of a knowledge base
about different islands.
TEKS (2)(B) Participate in digital environments to develop cultural understanding by interacting with learners of
multiple cultures
At the end of the lesson students should be able to apply prior knowledge about the different island and
cultures, and develop new ideas they may have seen in the movie.
Extended Learning Program (ELP)
School districts are strongly encouraged to offer languages other than English in the elementary grades. For
districts that offer languages in elementary, the essential knowledge and skills are those designated as
Levels I and II - novice progress checkpoint, exploratory languages, and cultural and linguistic topics in
Subchapter C of this chapter (relating to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than
English).

I will decorate the classroom with a jungle like feel with palm trees, but in dream land with clouds and stars
hanging from the ceiling. I would also build a boat out of card board and put up maps of the ocean all around with a
bubble blower to have a feel for the waves. I will have nice nature music playing softly in the background. Once the
kids walk in I will have the light off and ask them to close their eyes and lay their heads on their desk, then I would
tell the class, dreams can mean many different things, has anyone ever had a dream?

Instructional Delivery:
Reading:
Direct Instruction- I will read the book to the class and ask questions to recall facts.
Small group- I will break the students into small groups and have a copy of the book for each group. Each group will
look up facts about the tropical islands and the bodies of water that surround them that are provided in the book.
Social Studies:
Centers- There will be five centers, three of the centers will have a picture of major islands and
a globe, one center will be on the computer, and the last center will be one on one with the
teacher. The students will have to find islands and oceans in their center on the globe, research
online, and the teacher will tie everything together in the one on one.
Direct Instruction- As a class we will go over the different islands on a map of the United States
and the four oceans. We will go over directions North, South, East and West.
Technology:
Direct Instruction- As a class I will ask the students to think about what they know about islands
and the ocean and draw it on a piece of paper or just write it down. I will also ask them to dream
big and create one thing from their own dream in their picture.
Independent- Students will use the computers to research on the ocean and then we will talk
About their findings together then we will then watch the movie, where the wild things are.

Check for Understanding:

At the end of each lesson, as a class, I will ask questions to check their understanding of the bodies of water and the
lands that surround them. I will also have each student work independently to draw a picture of an island and draw
what they would want their dream on an island to be like.

Model /Guided Practice:

Reading:
I will guide each student by reading the book to the class and teaching them about the islands and bodies of water
thats around them.
Social Studies:
I will guide the class by showing the class a map or the globe of the four main oceans and showing them the island
that surround them. I will give instructions on their center work, and also guide the students by showing them a map
and explain all of the parts of the map.
ELP:
I will guide children that struggle in English to have understanding of the theme, and have one on one time with
them
helping them through assignments
Technology:
I will guide the class by helping them begin to think about what they would do if they were in a dream on an island.
I will give some basic examples to help them think on their own. I will then guide them by sowing the class how to
look up information on the computer so they can research on their own in their centers.

Closure:
With each subject I will check for understanding, before going onto the next station, by asking each student to give
me one thing they learning about Islands, dreaming, or oceans?

Independent Practice:
I would do a couple independent practice such as drawing a picture, students will adventurously draw with
imagination of what they would expect to find on an island from their dreams. The students will regular paper or
construction paper and use markers, map colors, or crayons to design their picture. This will also ensure that the

students have mastered the skills about the different lands, what lives on islands, and the bodies of water
surrounding the lands. I would also incorporate computer research. Students will find facts about Islands and oceans
to gain more knowledge about the where they are located, climates, animals, and different cultures.
