Question 1
A consolidated-drained triaxial test was conduct ed on a normally consolidated clay. The
results are as follows:
3 = 195.15 kN/m2
(d)f = 215.45 kN/m2
Determine:
i.
Angle of friction,
ii.
Angle that the failure plane makes with the major principal plane
iii.
Normal stress,, and shear stress, f, on the failure plane
iv. Effective normal stress on the plane of maximum shear stress
v. Explain why the shear failure occurred along a plane with in Question 1 (ii) and
not along the plane of maximum shear stress.
Question 2
A specimen of saturated sand was consolidated under an all around pressure of 375 kN/m 2.
The axial stress was then increased without permitting drainage. The specimen failed when
the axial stress reached 255 kN/m2 and pore water pressure at failure was 189.45 kN/m2.
Determine:

The consolidated-undrained angle of shearing resistance

The drained friction angle,
