1/The Chronicle-Herald should know better than to run a front page news item on Dec 31, titled

Go Ahead have a drink or two; Alcohol is good for you, at least in moderation./ 2/It is well
known that alcohol (even in moderation) has devastating physical, psychological and social
effects./ 3/Alcohol is the leading cause of liver failure, pancreatic disease, brain degeneration,
depression, automobile accidents, family dysfunction and physical and sexual abuse./ 4/The
benefit of alcohol in lowering HDL (good cholesterol) is marginal;/ 5/its not enough to
outweigh the detrimental effects./ 6/There is strong evidence that tobacco reduces the risk of
ulcerative colitis,/ but 7/promoting the use of tobacco for its health-enhancing properties would
be irresponsible./ 8/The Chronicle Herald should highlight ill effects of alcohol, with the aim of
reducing (or even eliminating) its use by society./ 9/The Dec 31 article unjustly glorifies the
benefits of alcohol and conveys a misleading message, especially to the youth./

This argument is about The Chronicle-Herald knowing better than to encourage people to drink
alcohol, especially on New Years Eve. They stated that alcohol is good for you in moderation.
They said this because it was proven that alcohol lowers HDL. Though this small benefit in no
way outweighs the detrimental effects alcohol can have on people.

(Description of attached diagram) Because [2] and [3] are proven to be true, together they prove
that [4] and [5] are also true. [6] and [7] create an analogy with [4] and [5]. They compare
tobacco and alcohol, both do have health benefits but in both cases are not beneficial enough to
encourage the behavior. Because we now see how everything fits together it is safe to say [9].
Because [9] is true and there is plenty of facts to back it up, we are lead to our conclusion [1].
Because of [1] then [8] so they can correct the false information they have already print.

Overall, I believe this argument is a very strong one. Alcohol plays a part in many deaths in
America every year. It was very irresponsible for The Chronicle-Harold to encourage people to
drink. It made it even worse that the ad was released on New Years Eve; one of the most popular

drinking holidays in America. They say in moderation, but who actually listens to the reason in
an ad? Most people just get the main message. Alcohol is good for you. This may subconsciously
cause someone to pay less attention to how many drinks they have on NYE. Then there is the
possibility of that person getting into a car and driving intoxicated. Then they run the risk of
hurting themselves and other people. Not to mention all of the other ways that alcohol can be
detrimental to someones life. I think this is a very strong argument.
