Code. The union and individual state governments
all each consist of executive, legislative and judicial
branches. The legal system is based on the English
Common and Statutory Law. Also the seat of
government is in New Delhi, "New Delhi" is
commonly used as a metonym for the Central
Government.

Prime Minister
Narendra Modi is the current Prime Minister of India, elected into office May 26, 2014.
Before taking office, Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat for 13 years. He was also the
Member of Parliament from Varanasi, Gujarat.
Since taking office, Modi's administration has focused on reforming and modernizing
India's infrastructure and government, reducing bureaucracy, encouraging increased
foreign direct investment, improving national standards of health and sanitation
and improving foreign relations. Modi has been appreciated for starting initiatives
like Swachh Bharat Mission, Make in India and Digital. Earlier, as Chief Minister
of Gujarat, Modi's economic policies have been praised, although his administration has
also been criticized for failing to significantly improve the human development in the
state and failing to prevent the 2002 Gujarat riots.

History
India is a nation that, like the United States, had to fight for independence from the
British. In the 18 century, the Mughal Empire ruled India, but was on the verge of falling.
The British came and took control of India, and began their rule. As time progressed, the
Indian people were ready to take back control of their country, after years of struggle
and discrimination. In 1919, Mahatma Gandhi began a series of non-violent protests
against the British government. Finally, in 1947, India gained its freedom. Jawaharlal
Nehru was the first prime minister of the newly established Indian government. Nehru
kept the National Congress, which was the major political party of India. In 1960, Indira

Gandhi came into office, and as a result she had to

split Congress power. Once, she demonstrated her
control, people started to take a liking towards her.
As Congress fell, more political parties began to rise
like the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJPs are still a
powerful political party today.

Court System
In India, judicial system is an integrated system. The
decisions made by higher courts are binding on the
lower courts. The judiciary system is also called the
appellate system. This means that a person can appeal to
a higher court if they believe that the judgment passed by
the lower court is not justified.
