Depth Study 6B: The Black Death in Asia, Europe and Africa (14 Century Plague)

Recent Prior Experience (specific relevant concepts, skills and values the school students have experienced prior to this lesson):
Prior to this lesson, students were taught Depth Study 5a: Australians at War: Japan under the Shoguns students were met syllabus outcomes HT4-2, HT4-4,
HT4-6, HT4-7, HT4-9 and HT4-10.
The content covered in these lessons provided students with an overview of the way of life in Shogunate Japan, including social, cultural, economic and
political features (including the feudal system and the increasing power of the shogun), the role of the Shogunate and subsequent decline. This lesson will be
an introduction into Shogunate Japan.
A variety of teaching strategies have been incorporated into prior learning, such as problem-based learning and role-playing.

Living conditions and religious beliefs in the
14th century, including life expectancy,
medical knowledge and beliefs about the
power of God (ACDSEH015)

Indicators of Learning for this lesson:


By the end of this lesson, the students will:

Locate the extent of human settlements in 14thcentury Asia, Europe and Africa,
Describe the everyday life of men, women and
children in the 14th century and life expectancy at this
time,
Describe what doctors understood about diseases
and their treatment in this period,
Outline what European people believed about
religion and the power of God in this period,

Assessment:
- Informal formative assessment is to be
undertaken through questioning and class
discussions of key concepts.
- Informal summative assessment task is to
be undertaken through a Kahoot quiz which
has been designed to address the syllabus
content taught in the lesson. The questions
have been prepared the syllabus content
referencing (ACDSEH015).

Introduction:

- Welcome the students and settle the class for learning,


- Provide overview of the lesson and introduce the concept of the the Black Death with
particular reference to the location and extent and impact on the modern world,
- Inform the students that we will be focusing on the extent of human settlements, the
everyday life of those in Asia, Europe and Africa and the beliefs of Doctors and the role
of religion.

- Question students on what they know of the Black


Death.

Lesson Development: Overview (Video) The Black Death extent, location and
the people of the time.

- Play 10 minutes of the video The Black Death Worst Plague in History.
- Open discussion for 10 minutes with the class on the content of the video to develop
an understanding of what the Black Death was, the extent and location and the broader

- Teacher led reading on the Medical Knowledge and treatments of the Black Death
from pages 362-369 of the class textbook.

- Provide a summary of the Black Death
- Provide a general overview of the extent, location and people of the time, including
the beliefs of doctors and the role of religion.
