Standard 1: Algebraic Reasoning: Patterns- The student will sort and classify objects and
analyze simple patterns.
1. Sort and group objects into a set and explain verbally what the objects
have in common (e.g., color, size, shape).
ISTE Standard 2: Communication and collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively,
including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of
others.
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a
variety of digital environments and media.

Students need to know the physical differences between students such as

hair color and boy/girl. They also need to know their shapes and colors.

Use students to create pattern using physical traits such as

brunette/blonde, boy/girl, or have students hold shapes. Students will
stand in lines to create patterns.
The teacher will have a classroom discussion over the hook. The teacher
will ask questions to students about patterns in real life.

The students will be taken to a computer lab where each individual
student will be able to play the matching game. Each student will
complete the game. Then the students will return to classroom for
closure.
The teacher will ask students how knowing about patterns helped them in
the computer lab.

Students will finish handout in class for assessment of knowledge. The
teacher will use an elmo to let the class check their answers compared to
a worksheet completed by the teacher..

*The time is merely a suggestion based on a 45-55 minute period of time (normally middle school and high school).
Elementary school schedule depends on the subject. ELA/Reading is normally no less than a 90 minute block of time.

TECHNOLOGY:
Describe the mobile learning setting: Students will learn their lesson over patterns in the
classroom or any other setting. They will practice learning patterns in the school computer lab.
Once students have had time to play the game, students will return to their classroom to have a
classroom discussion about patterns in real life and complete a worksheet.
Technology- describe the kinds of devices required for the activity:
Computers
Smartboard
Elmo
Describe the Apps or Websites:
Starfall is a webpage where students play learning games.

skippattern.com is a webpage that provides different worksheets over patterns.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE CLOSURE:
Learning Activity- The teacher will call students to the front of the room one at a time. The
teacher will ask students if they notice what the teacher is making and what the particular pattern
is. The teacher can make several different patterns such as boy/girl and hair colors.
ADDITIONAL THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Classroom Management- If students are included in the lesson, they may be less of a problem
in the classroom. Students will be given specific instructions to follow in regards to technology
and the teacher will establish a consequence is the instructions are not followed.
Student Learning Benefits- Many students benefit from visuals and by giving them something
they can look at can help them retain the information. Today's students also grew up with
different types of technology in their hands, so it is something they are comfortable.
Assessment(s)- During the hook, the teacher will ask random students if they see what is going
on. During the computer lab, the teacher will walk around to see how students are doing on the
game. The teacher will also assess students based on the worksheet they complete at the end of
the lesson.
