All matter is made up of small particles called

atoms
Atoms are too small for you to see, but they are
all around
An element is matter that is only made up of one
kind of atom.
There are more than 100 different kinds of
elements
Atoms may join with other atoms to form
particles called molecules.
Air contains molecules of oxygen and molecules
of water
Each molecule of oxygen contains only the
elements oxygen, each molecule of water
contains two elements: hydrogen and oxygen.
A compound is formed by combining atoms of
different elements.
o A compound is a new substance and is
different than the elements that formed it.

Water is different from either hydrogen or

oxygen.
A chemical change is when two elements are
combined to form a new substance.
o Example: water and flour would make some
type of food.
