Abstract
Based on a Professional Development Portfolio this assignment is a reflection of the artifacts
developed for this domain. Three Artifacts have been established along with a reflection as to the
rationale and value of selecting specific artifacts. Domain D. TPE 8: Learning About Students
and TPE 9: Instructional Planning.

Teachers have a passion for teaching and learning. When planning a lesson a
teacher needs to consider and reflect on the skills and knowledge the students will need to
bring to the unit to be successful in learning new material. (Eby et. al., 2013 pg. 87)
They also need to find ways to improve their own teaching, bringing the best teaching
tools, strategies and assessments to promote mastery of the content. The first artifact for
this domain is a lesson in history and social studies that I design to teach in a sixth grade
class along with a reflection of the teaching outcome. This lesson was presented to a sixth
grade class taking in consideration students needs and abilities using a close reading
strategy to intensively analyze a reading passage to come up to terms with what it says,
how it is stated, and what it means. As this domains states that teacher need to learn about
their students. Students are not only intelligent but also social and emotional individuals,
and all these aspects interact to impact learning and performance. In order for teacher to
plan an effective lesson, it is important to consider who our students are, taking into
account their prior knowledge, intellectual development cultural background, general
experiences and expectations.
Following this lesson I added a second artifact to demonstrate how I modified the
assignment to help better meet the needs of the students, especially ELL and students
with learning disabilities.
The third artifact is an article review that states how differentiation is important in
a classroom, differentiation is creating a balance between academic content and
students individual need (Tomlinson and Imbeau 2010) The article suggest that in order
to achieve this, four elements need to be modified these are: content, process, product and
affect. It is important that teachers create learning opportunities that allow every student
to have access to the academic content in many ways. Taking all this in consideration

teacher are able to plan accordingly in order to create a blend of learning styles and meet
their students needs. Assessment is also another factor that needs to be taken in
consideration when planning to meet students needs. As we know one size does not fit
all, every student is unique in their own way and we must give our students the
opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities in different ways.
