Unit 3 Vocabulary

Coefficients: The number in front of the variable that indicates multiplication (4x+5=20) 4is the
coefficient.
Like terms: Numbers that share the same variable or lack thereof (2x + 3y -5x= 30) 2x and 5x are
like terms because they share the same variable of x
Distributive property: Multiplication property where a (b+c)= ab+ ac
Factor: A number or quantity that when multiplied with another produces a given number.
Numeric expressions: Numbers, symbols and operations (add, subtract, etc.) grouped together that
show the value of something.
Algebraic expressions: Similar to numeric expressions with the inclusion of variables and
exponents.
Maximum: The largest value
Minimum: The smallest value

Cube roots: The number that produces a given number when cubed. The

Terminating decimals: A decimal that ends


Repeating decimals: A decimal that doesnt end but repeats a pattern. Not to be confused with an
irrational number.
Truncate: A limit in the amount of decimal places
Laws of exponents: A set of rules in algebra regarding exponents (powers)
Power: The number of times to multiply the base number by (i.e. exponent)
Scientific notation: An alternate way to write numbers that are considered to be too large or too
small.
Radicand: The number inside of the radical symbol. The number 9 is the radicand in
